Do you ever cut in to the existing outside of a chimney?

I am looking to put on the screened in patio where the existing chimney is, is it ok to either cut in or build on to the existing brick for a functional fireplace

You might want to research the downside and check the codes for your area. We wanted to do something similar in our sunroom and ended up leaving the existing fireplace untouched, building the fire pit outside and installing a mini-split heat/air system in the sunroom. Contractors also offered an affordable winter only option in a gas stove. Installation only required a single 6 inch vent hole. Good Luck! It's a great space to enjoy!

Have a local engineer review prior to demo.
