Root bound much?

So, I recently realized that my two largest jades were hopelessly root bound. I repotted one, thinking I would just do some pot shuffling but then the 2nd largest still had a root ball too big to fit in any pot in my collection. At least not one that is empty. So, I need to go buy another pot. But- have you ever seen one this root bound? And do you think it could cause lower leaves to drop at an increased rate? Because this tricolor has been doing just that. And it's got all these nubs that look like the plant might put out some new lower growth soon. What are your thoughts? Think the repot is all that is called for at this point?

When a plant is that rootbound it is difficult for it to get enough water and nutrients so leaf loss is to be expected.

If you want to keep the plant the same size you can root prune it-think a triangle starting at the outside of the ball at the top and slicing down. If you have a particular pot you want to use, gently trim the edges until you have a fit.

If you have a sink sprayer use that to wash the roots and then repot. New root growth should start almost immediately.

This is a good time to do it.

I am happy for it to grow as big as it wants to be. The rotting media was a bit damp, so I left it out for today. It is sitting in that bowl it is pictured with. I plan to get a new pot in the next day or two for it to go in. I bough a bigger one for my other jade, and I think I will go get on that is similar, but a different color. I like pretty pots :-)

Well, I finally got it a new pot and got it fixed up. It's been a couple of days now. Interestingly, after just a few days sitting in that bowl there was visible root growth. Fine little white roots emerging from the compacted root ball.... cylinder actually.

Before potting I decided to remove all the fine roots and loosen everything up. I removed a massive amount of fine roots. But there was still plenty of strong healthy roots to take hold. I figured it was probably a good time for a root clean up.

I also really love the new pot I got for it. I'm excited to see some new growth in this baby soon! Alrhough I don't expect to see much for a while, since it should be working on putting out more roots.

Please excuse the mess in the back ground. I will post updates as I see new growth. I'm expecting these nodes to put something out soon.

I would just repot it for now and wait a month or so. When you transplant anything it goes through a bit of shock and it has to get acclimated to the new pot its in. So just do the transplant and observe it before doing anything drastic. It will let you know if it's happy or not within a few weeks. Jades are pretty hardy. I just transplanted mine and its doing great! I had a few little ones that were growing like crazy in little pots, so I took them out and put them all in a bigger pot to accommodate them all comfortably. I think you should be fine.. Just be delicate while handling it, don't want to break it. And if any leaves do fall off, you can just let them take root and have a new one. Good luck!

No problem Chelayna. Some threads get too long I don't read them all either. I wasn't gentle when I repotted it. I was kind of a jerk, ripping off all the fine little roots. But I expect that the jade will just get stronger roots. I watered it for the 1st time today and by looking at it you wouldn't know it went through all that.

Ya while the leave fall off easily, the plant itself is surprisingly sturdy. When a few fall off mine I just treat them like babies and next thing I know, I have another baby jade. Mine is a different strain than yours tho. But they are fun and nice looking.
