How do you tie the waterfall into the pool?

in other words, how do you ensure that the water makes its way back into the pool and is not lost in the water feature? Do you set the water feature onto a ledge that is part of the pool shell, do you use a liner, etc....?

    We put a full ledge under boulders with a lip at the height of the pool coping to create a basin.

    Thank you. Is the ledge poured as part of the pool at the same time as the pool or is it a separate ledge poured after the pool? If the latter, how do you bridge the gap between the two?
