For zone 5b I believe, the planting time is over. It might not survive the winter.

I figure I have nothing to lose,I can't keep them indoors so guess I will plant them anyway and see what happens. We had such a wet and hot summer, never got two I had bought on sale in the ground.

I couldn't resist buying a couple more. What's the alternative to planting them, overwinter them in pots in my shed or basement?

I realize this may not be very helpful for you in colder zones, but in my area these are planted year round. In fact, the best selections are usually offered in time for fall and winter planting, likely because they are one of the few fully evergreen perennials. Was at my nursery yesterday and there was a fresh crop of about 10 different varieties, all looking very good. The nursery owner purchases plugs from Terra Nova and grows them on, so he often has some of the newest intros available.

I decided since I have them already, and got them on sale, to plant them and see what happens. I thought about just keeping them in the house as a house plant, but read they don't do well as an indoor plant.

Mulch around them (not on the crown) to help prevent heaving in the freeze-thaw cycles.

Heuchera have been over wintered successfully in an unheated shed, just an option.

Most of my planting, transplant or dividing for Heuchera are in September when weather is cool. I have not lost any one yet. What Tj said is very important, good soil, mulch well, they will do fine. I just put a few in last week (small ones I rooted in small pots ~ 6 weeks ago) and I fully expect them to survive based on past experience.

However, for some weak growers (Fire Alarm for me, for example), their survival may not be assured.

Just anecdotal of course but I have put perennials in the ground even into November. (Much) more likely than not they have made it through the winter.

Same here rouge21_gw I have even left them in pots over the winter. But I would only do this with strong growers like the Carnival series

Just to report that the small heucheras I planted late september through mid October all made through the winter and are growing really well now. Some of them already start to bloom. They were rooted from existing plants I have: Obsidian, Paris, Georgia Peach, Caramel, Frosted Violet and Frost.

Thanks for your feedback, I did go ahead and plant the heucheras I had and they did survive thank goodness. I did use some mulch and that helped also.
