Help Me Make a Shared Tween Bedroom Work

These girls nearly 8 and 13 live in a large bedroom cluttered and poorly laid out. It's a very nice sized shared space (approx 16 x 20) but, we have too small a rug, likely too much furniture with 2 of everything and my daughters won't give anything up. Here's a panoramic view - oddly taken:

HI -- I would build a center room divider and the arrange the furniture by backing the dressers to the divider and arrange the beds accordingly . The desks look fine and seem to work where they are now .Each side can have their own rug .

thought about a shared divider - wouldn't make the room feel too small? Do you have a picture of what you have in mind? Thanks for all the great ideas!

You have a large room, there. Does it matter if the room looks small if it works for your girls? Your teen will appreciate the privacy. There are 5 years between them, correct?

I don't see why either should give anything up. Looks like they each have a bed, a desk and a dresser. Sounds like necessities to me. I think division is a fantastic idea.

I agree- not asking them to give up their furniture, just wanted to see if the placement is the best use of the space. Perhaps all it needs is a rug. One is sporty and the other is boho and finding coordinating bedding is proving difficult - they want something that 'goes' together in their space. Any recommendations?

For my youngest girls (2 & 5), I bought white ruched PB comforters and am accenting each bed with pillows/blankets/quilts according to age/taste/requests. One prefers blue, one pink. One prefers horse (sheets), the other is . . .2. If everything is pink, she's good.

I will likely do a solid or tone on tone area rug in there just to pull it all together. Decided to do a white color on the walls to save myself the frustration I was having with color choice. Repeating one color with each will help unify. We are repeating white, pink and navy. But you could simply repeat one color throughout the room and do one sporty and one boho style. It will be a challenge, but can be done.

When I was thinking about kids' shared rooms, I introduced my kids to Houzz! Create an ideabook labelled with each girl's name, and let them search for ideas and add any photos they love. Maybe you will notice some similar design themes or shared saves.

You need drapes to soften all the hard furniture. Make the bed parallel, so they both back up by the window. Place both dressers back to back coming off the wall between the Windows. If possible have a plywood panel between the two as a divider (built, painted and attached) and they could each have a mirror of their own. Bulletin boards above the desks and comfortable upholstered chairs for desk work and lounging. Get another white rug or two of something else.

Had to check picture. If space allows canter beds on Windows, and place a narrow table with a lamp in the corner. It will look more balanced and make bed making easier.

These drawings are awesome!! Unfortunately, there is not enough space for my desks and dresser to work on one wall. I wish - but great ideas to play with.

i think you're the mom, so if you say it goes, it goes.

Here is a view from the other corner - I am standing in front of the double door closet (weird angle again...) bedroom door is the one on far left that is open...

I would try to use the existing furniture to give each girl their own space. Maybe back the two dressers or the desks to each other to act as a room divider. Since your girls are 8 and 13, I would also involve them in the design. Use graph paper to draw the room, have them measure and cut out the large furniture pieces, and they can play with different arrangements themselves to come up with ideas they like.

definitely give them space to get away from their sibling. As a teen i know how hard it would be to share a room with your sister, make sure you give them places where they can hide things as they wont like their roommate touching there stuff, drawers and cupboards with locks are a great thing because they will make your girls feel like their personal stuff is safer also it will help them get along easier if they don't think their sister is spying on them.

^Nice to have the youth vote out! :)

For bedding, what about stripes in your sporty daughter's team colors, and a coordinating paisley, floral, or solid for your boho daughter? It's relatively easy to sew two flat sheets together to make a duvet cover, if you're at all crafty.

Old scarves, afghans, and shawls are readily available at second hand stores, to drape over desk chair, headboard, etc. to make the boho side more layered.

The paint color you have is pretty versatile, I can imagine it working with a wide variety of color schemes.

I like the pic posted by downbytheriver.

From my experience both 8-almost-9 year olds and 13 year olds are very attached to their dignity and autonomy, and are well old enough to choose what they have in their space. So despite what mom might prefer design-wise, I believe that if they are able to work out a system that they agree on it will be a better arrangement than anything imposed upon them.

Short of taking down walls of course!

Try each bed in the corner by a window parallel to each other, headboard on the window wall.

The two dressers back to back between the beds acting as a room divider.

The two desks at the ends of the two beds.

Now each girl has a defined space for herself. Each can pick out her own bedding and posters.

The dressers are different heights, I tried back to back but it doesn't look right.

Ikea makes a fantastic loft bed/ desk set that gives my twin boys a much-appreciated sense of privacy and control over their own space. It also takes advantage of vertical space that had been wasted. It took me all weekend to put together, but Ikea will deliver and assemble for a pretty reasonable charge.

Wow this is amazing! Where is the bedding and rug from in this photo? This look is exactly what they would love!

The striped bedding is from Overstock. The patterned bedding is from PB Teen and the rug is from RH Teen.
