Canned tomatoes for canning?

Looking for some help. Every tomato season I look forward to canning tomato chili sauce. I don't have a garden, so I rely on the local farmers market. Problem is, we had a heat wave and the tomatoes ripened early (while we were away on vacation). It looks like I may be out of luck this year for field ripened tomatoes. Can I safely use store bought canned tomatoes instead? Not what I really want to do, but I do love the chili sauce!

The reasons it isn't recommended are quality and energy-use related, not food safety related. So if the double processing textures, the added stabilizers, preservatives, etc., and double use of energy are acceptable to you then there is no reason you can't use them.

Well, if using a canned product, why not make it "fresh" as needed? Nancy

nancyjane - the main reason is that if I were to make it "fresh", I would never have any when I wanted it. I'm just not that organized.
