Redwood -- stain or clear?

Hello - we are in the process of remodeling a mid-century home in Michigan that has a good amount of old growth redwood paneling (real stuff from the 1960s...not some cheap veneer). It is currently stained a very dark color and we are hoping that we can lighten it to a tone that is similar to what you show here. Do you know what the process was for restoring the redwood in these photos? Is the stain on the wood clear?...or a specific color? Our builder is currently thinking that ripping down the boards and sanding/planing will be the best way to go, but I would be curious to hear about your process. Many thanks. Beautiful home! (I am originally from the East Bay myself).
