I don't understand that - defeats the idea of having a maintenance free (as in no need to paint) surface. Painted surfaces get dirty, too. I suppose if someone prefers to repaint when surfaces get dirty as opposed to cleaning them, then it's a wash (ha! I kill me!) financially.

It mostly gets painted because it only comes in stark white, a poor color choice for most houses. I think it looks more like wood once painted, so would paint it in any event. Paint lasts a very long time on Azek.

Paint covers up seams, filled nail holes and construction marks as well as providing a different color. Paint lasts a long time on cellular PVC if you use a 100% acrylic latex paint with colors having a Light Reflective Value (LRV) of 55 or higher.

Using a paint like mentioned by JDS with a mildewcide additive also reduces the propensity of Azek type materials to mildew.

We repainted the fiber cement siding on the decade old house we just sold and the trim was painted as well. It was Azek I believe.

that is all what this guy told me, that paint on Azek PVC, I think he actually used Wolf) lasts a lot longer due to the lack of expansion and contraction of the PVC.

As a paint coating professional, I deal with this question quite a bit. Azek’s purpuse is to replace wood that will rot. In my world of protective coatings, paints purpose is to protect wood, cement, metal etc.

In this case with Azek, it is a flat/matte sheen and it will like vinyl pick up mold/mildew and unlike vinyl, it will pick up dirt. And if you are ok with no paint and you plan to caulk only, you can experience the same thing with ordinary caulk…dirt pick up. I recommend White Lightnings ”Pristen” it doesnt pick up dirt.

As for the paint, go with the best, Sherwin-Williams Exterior Emerald Rain Refresh, the self cleaning paint, it’s like putting Rain-X on your windshield

We are building a new house and debating between hardie plank for corner trim or painted azek. The color I am trying to match is Hardie plank Iron Grey or Night Grey. Any advice? Would you paint azek trim with dark grey and would it hold the paint or go with hardie trim?
