I think what you are doing is already good but you need to be more consistent. He won't learn that in a day or two, guide him like that for a week. I won't resort to the newspaper though.

This link may be of help. BC's are a unique breed, especially since they're bred to be a working dog, so I suggest you purchase a book about BC's or find as much info as you can online. They're very intelligent and need to use their mind as much as they need exercise

Do you know anything about the breed? They are natural herders and even though it's play, the puppy is doing what comes naturally to it. Like Annz says, they're super smart and will need to be continuously challenged. They can be wonderful family dogs though if you learn how to properly handle them. I would look into learning as much as you can about the breed and start training classes as soon as you are able to.

When nipped we used to yelp quite loudly, as if the nip really hurt us. It startled friends but worked quite well.

this is our third BC. Have no idea what he's crossed with. They suggested it was there sons miniature Aussie. Maggie our first was an amazing dog. Rags the next one was a bit of a clown and wouldn't listen to anything he didn't want to but was a good guard dog. This boy is stubborn but does respond to praise. Guess I'll try the yelping also. Hope my family realizes I haven't lost it with the noise. Thanks to all suggestions. Been 13 years since I've had a pup so maybe I need a refresher too.

Well at least you're familiar with the breed! A lot has changed in the past 10 years when it comes to animal care, so a refresher will surely help..

When our lab was a puppy, she would sometimes play way too hard and hurt me. When she did I'd snap my fingers or lightly clap my hands and firmly tell her no bite. The noise would distract her from what she was doing and she quickly learned the tone I had in my voice meant I wasn't happy. It worked well.
