Floor stain color

White oak floors needs to decide stain choice by Monday. Walls will be BM distant grey (a very clear white) base boards will be 7 inch tall semi gloss same white. Red brick by sample is what was used for our mudroom floor. I am leaning towards bottom right dark walnut, any advice, thoughts, comments?

I like the upper right or lower left. The lower right seems a little two dark and heavy of a brown.

The lower right color does not work with the brick in the mudroom. The color temperature doesn't go together. The other three works better.

Consider Zar Mocha stain. It's a very nice "brown/minimal taupey" color on white oak and would work nicely with Distant Grey and your floor brick.

Scott design, I have zar mocha on my doors. This is the back door to the mudroom. Unfortunately my installer uses duraseal no exact match to mocha

    Y Z,

Here is a better photo of the brick, the samples are not sealed and look flat. Second photo same brick on fireplace

Most flooring professionals can mix a custom stain. Can he try that for you?

My installer said he would prefer not to. I may ask to see another sample antique brown looks to be between the two I like so far
  • 10 years ago
I like the upper two. I think it would be better to take a pic with your paint and trim.
is the floor in the kitchen and if so what color are the cabinets?
Misswumble, the floor does go in the kitchen also, cabinets are white almost same color as walls which are BM distant grey.
Hello all, here is the wall and trim color as seen in the master bath so ignore the marble flooring please, although it will abut the wood flooring in the master closet.

Before you decide, PLEASE have a single coat of FINISH applied to the surface of your stains. It should take 2 minutes to open up the can and dip a brush into it and apply a few strokes of finish to these samples. The finish CHANGES the look of the samples. You should never decide a stain colour without the single coat of finish.

Too many people have done this, only to find the CHANGE was TOO MUCH for them. And then the battle began - who was to pay for the redo?

And is is a bit disconcerting that a professional hardwood floor finisher will not offer custom mixed stains.....hmmmmm. My spidey senses are tingling.

Cancork, there is two coats of satin fin she on the two I am considering. As to the custom they will, but prefer not to. No need for spidery senses

Excellent news. You stated, "the samples are not sealed and look flat". Which is what I was referring to. The Dark Walnut seems too green to me. Your door and brick have red in them...and I wonder if the Dark Walnut, while being a nice match to the mantle, will clash with the brick and the door (the door being the BIGGEST issue with clashing tones and should be the driving force for the colour choice).

I still wonder why they prefer not to mix stains. Did they offer a reason behind the "prefer not to"?

Whoa wait a sec.... your installer said 'he'd rather not'? Um your the boss. Assert yourself. You are paying for a service , not a 'I'd prefer not too'. What the hell is that? Mix the colours. Make him do it. Take charge of that. The installer has to own this.
Cancork, sorry for confusion it is the brick samples I was referring to as not being sealed and flat looking.
    Cancork,

Agree the walnut has a green tinge having them sample antique brown and special walnut Monday. As to mixing it was not a no, but a hesitancy and I understand his reasoning. He will if none of the sample are to our liking.

One more color sample, antique brown. Any comments besides dark is more work?

I have your Bruce red oak floor and I used ebony. Sounds dark, but your oak does take stain uniformly. The grain is black and the rest is dark brown. Try a sample of that. I have a low luster poly and it is super easy to clean. It is your brick that is throwing you off. Look at it in different spaces so it works wherever you are. I tried custom but unless you mix everything into one huge batch, it can get patchy which your floor person is alluding to. I will get photo and post in a min.

typo above. The oak DOES NOT TAKE STAIN UNIFORMLY! I bird-dogged the staining so I was sure it was going to be as dark as I wanted it. I knew the red oak would be lighter and sure enough, it is perfect.

You can see the black on the grain but the rest takes the stain in interesting ways. It is great and we love it. Been in home 10 years and it still looks new! Just use Bona (lightly!) maybe once a month and spot when needed and then dust with Bona refill pads, not a problem. Haven't even resurfaced the poly. Two small businesses in home and people coming and going, and no problem. I would go darker. Especially with that brick and your other stains that seem darker. At least try it. Best to you. But be there when they start this so you can pull the plug if necessary!! Very important. Once this stain is down, it's done.

The label on my photo should read "ebony stain". Sorry, my typo fingers!

    Flo,

Thank you actually think the antique brown on the white oak works well with the brick. Brick floor is in mudroom adjacent space to the kitchen separated by a 5 inch threshold board.

You are the best judge, because colors over the Internet are horrible. White oak is really nice, so I'm sure you will be happy. But, I still hope you can be there when this starts so you are happy with the way it is coming along. Best to you. Good hardwood floors are hard to come by these days, so you are doing a great thing here.

    Flo,

Yes will be here ever moment. We have lived through two years of renovations and addition. While workers are here I am here. Of course sleeping at a hotel for two weeks once stain goes on.

I actually like the pre-stain white oak floors better than any of the test swatches! But, I guess that is personal preference. They would look so good with a gray wash.

    Smithrovich,

Thank you. Yes, the natural wood or in a grey would be lovely, just not for this home.

Diane R, Did you use Dura Seal antique brown on white oak? do you have any other photos you could post when the room is more brightly lit? I'm considering antique brown on my newly installed white oak floors so would love to see some other shots. Thanks!

I did the dark walnut and love it

Yes, did the antique brown dura seal on white oak with bone satin finish three coats
  • 9 years ago
Salty/queen tried posting photos keeps coming up system error I can try tomorrow. I can tell you the dark walnut had a tinge of green in my rooms that antique brown did not.

I'd keep the yellows soft, except for in the tray and the art. Those I would make bright for contrast.

Thank you Diane! The last photo shows how pretty it looks! I just posted this post in the forums of my mother's oak floors. Do you think the color she used is Antique Brown? I'm trying to figure it out. Thanks! https://www.houzz.com/discussions/can-you-identify-this-dura-seal-stain-color-dsvw-vd~4248995

No, I think she used the one in my original photo top left I think was provincial

You might be right about that. Thanks!
