How feasible is it to add a shoulder strap to a tote bag?

I want
to add a shoulder/crossbody strap to a tote bag. The fabric is heavy
canvas. Since it is unlikely that I can match the existing strap color, I would like to sew the D-ring and webbing in the side pockets. That means the attachments would be about halfway down the bag length.

The following is an example of the D-ring attachment, except that I would hide it in the pocket:

Would the fabric hold the ring webbing without tearing? Bag holds about 20-25 pounds. Since the strap would not be at the top, would the attachment points be unstable for carrying? That is, would the bag pivot if the weight were evenly distributed from top to bottom? Presumably my body would keep it from pivoting, but then, what do I know.

I don't know why the pix are so big.

I wouldn't put it as far down as the pocket. I guess I don't really see a need to hide it. Is the bag lined? I would add a piece of heavy interfacing inside to help support the webbing with a the D ring.

Probably not ...

It would be easier, and more secure, to run the strap through the pockets (unstitch them an inch or so) and completely under the bag so it supports the entire bat on the strap.

clt3, I wouldn't be able to match the existing webbing. The color of the strap doesn't matter.

lazy_gardens, I agree with adding the strap under the bag as well. I was trying to make it easier.

I think I'll just make another bag out of Cordura and do it right.

You could add bridge connectors like these: http://emmalinebags.com/products/bridge-connector-1-1-4-wide-in-nickel-finish-1-pack , so you wouldn't need to worry about the color of the webbing. Search bridge connectors - they come in lots of sizes and colors.
