I like the armoire. I like the wood tables- you need the wood to pull the room together. Try adding some white throw pillows to carry the white throughout entire room. What do you think about putting the armoire where the sofa is? Having the sofa face the FP. Then putting the two yellow chairs where the blue chair is? I think matching chairs should be together in a space, but that's just me. Then putting the low cabinet between the two windows. You may have to back your sofa up a bit- line it up with the edge of the sliding door. I know you didn't ask that, but it was an observation. I love all your colors and fabric choices.

I like the armoire but it seems out of place with the rest of the stuff int he room and it is competing with the fireplace. It is huge for the room and dwarfs everything else. I would rearrange the furniture first. I would remove all the stuff on both sides of the fireplace and place the couch either facing the fireplace. or by the windows. I would need to see it. Then, I would take the blue chair and put it on the left of the fireplace (my left) facing into the room and move the armoire center of the wall. I would think about also painting those two wooden chairs white. A picture of the whole space would help too.

ummm....it's so hard to say where stuff will fit- I am going off a computer screen. I think the first thing i would do is just turn the sofa nad see how the space feels. Then see how the two chairs fit, how the armoire looks where it is after the rearranging.....i hate to have you move the armoire and hate it there. lol

Like the idea of painting the bamboo chairs. I'll enlist some support to rearrange the furniture and post more pictures.

You did a nice job on the armoire I think. Looks very fresh. I'd love to see how the furniture arrangement that Kelly suggested works.
I do think that your coffee table could do with a coat of white paint too.
I'm don't think your rug works for your space. Sorry. I think it's the red in your rug that's making me not like it there. All your other colours are soft. Soft yellow, soft blue, soft green... I think a rug with blue or green would work better.
Love the chairs. I don't think I would paint them. I like the bamboo and it goes nicely with your floor.
I'd paint the coffee table first and then see if other things need painting.

(the examples I've included could be totally wrong, hard to judge colours on a screen)

Thanks to everyone for all your comments! I'm in agreement that the room arrangement needs help, but my wife wants to leave the sofa where it is. We have already tried most of what was suggested . When the sofa faces the fireplace, the room is closed off into a cramped and small living area that we don't like.

I also agree that the rug doesn't work well. What about this yellow one? I want to keep the green (which is actually the color of a lime) to just a few pops. Alternatively, I like the blue rugs suggested.

Any more weigh-ins on painting the coffee table and/or bamboo chairs? I will add white pillows to the couch, but am wondering if that will be enough white.

I'm not sure the yellow will work with your wall colour and floors. Did you a quick mock up. I'll do a mock up with a blue rug so you can see the difference and decide which you like better.

Funny, I was just looking at rugs in my Ballard Design catalog. Check out Abby Hand Hooked Rug, item RT264. I think the tone of the yellow that is in it would "go" well with your armoire. Sorry I don't know how to upload the image for you.

If you want to leave sofa there, you might need to move armoire farther away. That will give you more room to pull your furniture in some (legs should be on the rug) and create easier conversation group.

If those are vintage bamboo chairs you should not paint them. Only if they are very new & of little value.

Love the paisley, pcmom. Unfortunately, the yellow color is actually green (first picture). So far, I like the blue rug best, although I think the blue is too strong. Maybe carolins' blue (second picture)

carolins - what software program do you use to add the rugs? I like how it is tilted to gain perspective.

Opps! Guess that is why it is a good idea to order the smallest rug they have first (which can always find a spot somewhere) to check out colors, feel, etc.!

Here's a couple of other choices

Ann Crane: I use Photoshop Elements. A less expensive version of Photoshop CS (if that means anything to you). Mind you, the pattern isn't to scale though, I just did very rough mock-ups.

And I do agree that the dark blue would be too strong. But I don't like the yellow, not enough contrast - too wishy washy. My favourite would be the green checkered rug, a bit Scandinavian looking. But I'd have to see it for real to know if it worked with the green pillows.

Figured out how to do the perspective with Corel Paintshop, so I'm experimenting with different rugs, pillows, and accessories on paper. I actually like my current rug - it has all the room colors in it and looks much better at closer range. Am hoping that by adding small pops of red, it will blend better into the room.

I think your rug is a little small, and the longest side of the rug should run parallel with the longest side of the room, but I do like your original rug choice. Just add a few red pops of color--a picture of red poppies on the wall to the right of the TV, perhaps. A bright and sunny room!

Thanks for the suggestions - will reorient the rug lengthwise and anchor with the sofa. Would appreciate some additional comments on painting the coffee table and end table white. Will leave the bamboo chairs as-is.

Your room is really pretty and is visually balanced....good use of colors and fabrics in the pillows and in the windows of the armoire, which looks great white since it offsets the fireplace. I would not paint bamboo, but would consider painting the coffee table and end table a green to match the pillow on the couch or a yellow to reinforce the wall color. The rug should be larger, but not so busy or vivid that it detracts from the feel of the entire room.

Saw what you were asking--yes, paint the coffee table white, but not the end table. Because the bookcase and the end table both flank the fireplace, and IT is white, I think it look funny if the end table was white. As it is, the fireplace is complemented by the wood pieces on either side of it.

Actually, the end table is between the blue chair and bamboo chair - you can barely see it, but it's the same style as the coffee table. But then, I like to do things in threes and the armoire, coffee table, and mantle would make three. Thanks for your suggestion!

@surfor. Yellow or green could be fun. Would you suggest antiquing it a bit, too?
