Double-ended bulbs

last modified: 9 years ago

I've read more than a few articles preaching about the potency of 1000 W double-ended light fixtures (primarly HPS). I'm growing a bunch of citrus trees, and they can get quite large--on the order of 6-7 feet. This means that some of my trees will only be a couple feet from the bulbs/reflectors.

My main concern with DE bulbs/fixtures is that the radiative heat will be debilitating or deadly for leaves that are close to the heat source. If any of you have DE fixtures, do you have any feedback regarding the heat intensity of them? I've disconnected my air-cooled fixtures from a ventilation source before, and the amount of heat they can radiate is extreme--hence my hesitation for adopting this potentially efficient lighting technique. Or, worst case, are those articles preaching snake oil?

Thanks!
