Stuck with honey oak throughout house...what colour flooring would go so it doesn't look so outdated?

Working on renos to sell our starter home. We've painted the walls and are planning to replace the lino and carpet on the main floor. Thinking about laminate for durability and price since it is a starter home. We have honey oak throughout our entire home. It would cost too much to update. What colour floors would go with honey oak so the place doesn't look so outdated? Our walls are grey but look kind of greenish in the pictures...

Nice wall color, but the only way to update this look without replacing the cabinets is to paint them, and the door casings...creamy white. There are so many ways to get real wood flooring at about the same cost as laminate, suggest you shop 'til you drop to find a deal. Thought of cork? It comes in planks and is well priced and unexpected.

I like a light wood floor -- per Patricia's suggestion, see if you can shop for real wood flooring? Some ideas --

I think when I look at hour photos all I see is the white/cream?
    doors
So I suggest u paint the island back the same to draw your atten away from doors
ANC brighten up the outdated colors

I'd recommend painting the molding around the doors and the base mold a white color. Paint the cabinets and laminate wouldn't be bad:)

Your colors look funny in the photo. If the walls and island are all a grey - blue that's good. They should all be the same color and blue-grey works well. There are great faux stone laminate floors that are creamy white - golden tones and that is what I would suggest. Visually it ties everything together, it's modern or fresh in a traditional way and practical.

Ditto Patricia Benson. If it's in the budget, I would replace the counters to get rid of the wood trim that gives it an 80's look. Even if you were able to get the same laminate you currently but with a bullnose edge....

Thanks for all the tips. There really is a lot of oak throughout the house so I really don't want to use up all my time and energy to paint it when I'll be moving out and won't get to enjoy the change. I need to concentrate on the floors so I can put the house up for sale. There are just so many colours to choose from I'm not sure what goes best with the honey oak. I've gone through a ton of pics on this houzz app but not many people ha e honey oak. Thanks for the pics Ed!

I'd use a darker color. If you can, take a drawer to a flooring showroom and see what looks best. Then take the sample home and look at it in your light. If you're selling your home, you're right, you don't want to repaint everything. I think it looks nice, and the new prospecive buyer may like the oak. If not, then they're not the right person for your home. Or they may tear everything out.
I'd stay away from laminate flooring; we're flooring contractors and there's nothing wrong with laminates, but they just don't sound like real wood. That would be more of a turn off to me than oak. Unfortunately there's no real inexpensive way to install hardwood flooring. If you go with something really inexpensive, then it's junk.
Do you HAVE to replace the floorig?

Thanks Chrysteen! Yes I have to replace the flooring. The Lino is really ugly. Maybe I will just go with hardwood. I've had a lot of people tell me to go light. How dark do you suggest? I definitely don't want it to look all the same colour because I really dislike the colour. I've attached a picture of the ugly Lino floors. I think changing the floors would make a huge difference. But also a very important decision on the look of our home which is why I really appreciate all the suggestions.

Changing the floors would definitely make a difference. I'd go several shades darker. If you're leaning towards lighter, that would work too, but definitely bring samples home to see what they look like. Good luck. Chrysteen

Use the tile that looks like wood. Also whatever you do, don't put a wood floor in that is the same shade as your cabinets. Since dark is what people want anyway, go that route. Personally, I like large scale tiles and would not install any wood or wood looking floors.

If it's a starter home just update the vinyl flooring. Porcelain tile in a light shade would be the real upgrade. There are some of both that have the look and texture of stone, Find one with a touch of ochre yellow and grey to blend with the oak and the Grey paint. With all the oak anything wood like including most cork will be too much wood tones. I wish I could remember the name of the Armstrong flooring used. Check their web site.

I would look into a large, light tile with creamy, warm veining. Then I would paint the stark white doors a warmer white with some brown undertones. I love slate, but multi-colored slate will darken this room too much, I think.

Personally think dark flooring would be a bad idea. Maybe something with beige or grey would work? Perhaps even a bit lighter than the first two?

I think that a slate gray tile would look nice with the oak. I have oak cabinets and my floors are kind of a terra cotta color with some gray, which I also like and have not gotten tired of.

I guarantee that painting the oak is easier and less expensive than buying new floors. If you're set on new floors anyway, having having white trim will be easy to pair with whatever floor you want.
