Just bought a nice little house but inside is not finished. Need help

There limited services where my house is. It's a little fishing village in Newfoundland. Beautiful location and view but I'm getting anxious trying to finish the inside. I have lots of pictures saved from HOUZZ ideas and now I need to put it together. Attached are some pictures of my house.

The island color in the following photo is BM Van Deusen Blue HC 156. It is one of my favorite blues.

This is the BM Van Deusen Blue with all white surrounding which sort of emulates your "light" conditions. With lower light it goes darker to the eye. But a great color.

A white that works well with the blues and pine color is BM Ivory White 925. So you have lots of good ideas. Keep us posted!

I went back and examined the art pieces and on my monitor (which we know monitors and colors are not accurate-so please take these thoughts under that consideration) the reds in the art, go quite orange. There are good darker reds too but something to consider. Not a big deal, but it makes me think the blue might be better for your base cabinets given the light conditions, art, pine/woods, etc. The blue would keep the palette more cohesive I believe.

So happy to hear from you; I have a bunch of pictures but could not find the discussion anymore. Awesome. I am back in Alberta, great trip, some work done, mostly planning. Have to repaint the new drywall, I got different paints everywhere. lol. Perfect timing Flo. Will post a few pics now

I searched for hours for this discussion.

I love the look of color of the drywall with the pine; I tried many different paint colors with pine and I think a paint with color takes away from the look of the pine; they did not compliment it at all. I just got back from NL in time to get back to work; I am off on the weekend and will get my pictures organized. I had pine put on the back wall opposite the big windows but it has to come off and be flipped over so the wide plank is showing.

Just about time for shift change now so I will chat soon.

The last pic is me. Hi

Sooooo many decisions and just trying to figure out which way to go. I have a picture here that I saved of another house on this site and I absolutely love it. Clean and simple but I don't want to stain my ceiling. The color of the pine is beautiful as it ages a bit. Just going to put a clear conditioner on there. Making some major changes to the existing structure also. All of the stairs are too narrow so they will come out and all new ones will go in.

I would like to have a nice clean light paint to compliment the pine. Having a hard time finding it. The ceiling in this picture is rough pine and it's gorgeous.

Your natural light there is going to cause you fits on paint color I believe. Are you doing some paint sample boards using good primed white boards? That will help you get the "truest" color picture. If you want pure white, try using just the "Base" paint you get locally with NO TINT. It might be your best bet. I would at least try it. Once you start tinting "base" paint it changes in unexpected ways sometimes.

I'm a fan of the blue kitchen cabinets!

I've tried 6 different paints on the primed walls right next to the pine, that's when I realized it takes away from the pine.

this one is maritime white and revere pewter; beautiful colors but not next to the pine.

Maritime white and white down. The maritime white has a strong red undertone. The white down has yellow undertone on one wall and red undertone on a different wall; omg the colors are mind blowing. There were 2 other colors but you cant tell from the pictures. The white down is very subtle; it could work.

I too really like the blue island in the photo above; its a gorgeous color.

I would definitely try plain "base" paint. that is simply their basic paint to which they add tint, as I mentioned earlier. I think you are going to need a pure white. these other "tints" are going to take away from the wood, which you don't want. then you can also go to the dark blue for cabinets without any trouble. Try that.

White down seems to be your favorite so far. If you head blue for cabinet bases .. test lead gray.

I can see that I need some more help with this project. I have a couple of months before I get to the cabinets and paint again; its a slow process back home lol. In April we will resume construction; the stairs are all coming out; they were too narrow and it would be a nightmare trying to move large items in and out of there. The bathroom is all coming out too.

Looking at the paint samples I tried is just mind blowing when I stand in different areas of the house; the colors look completely different in each room; thank you very much for preparing me to look at them at different times and areas. Ive learned so much about paint in the last few months but I still don't have a color.

Since you are in the northern climes, have significant amounts of natural light and interesting architecture, I do think that white is a good choice. Because there is so much gray outside, I personally would prefer a warmer white so it didn't go gray on me, but I also would like a really white white. Test bm simply white and go glossy with it on the trim around the windows. I think it may do the trick for you. My favorite blue for casework might be the bm bayard blue . . did I post that door here above? here it is again

I can't believe how much "re-work" is needed. That is a shame. Hope you aren't paying for that! Yikes! I like the blue libradesigneye posted. I do think you will need to try the pure whites as in NO TINT in paint at all at least to give you a baseline from which to lean. With your long winters, I would be concerned about any gray. Who needs gray skies inside and outside! Hoping things improve greatly come April! Seems so strange to me, because we build all year round down here. Maybe take off for Christmas and New Years. Craft all goes away for vacations! Cranking big time here right now. Take care and keep us posted on how things are evolving! It is a "process". But you are doing well and it will all be well.

Thank you for all your helpful advice. We do construction all year too but the construction man is the town grader operator until mid April, it's funny and ok. I am back in western Canada and it gives me time to do more research. I really don't need the house finished until the spring of 2019 so it gives me time to seek out help and plan properly. My mom lives right across the street and I get to stay with her while I'm back home and working on the house.

Im changing all the stairs because the current width is only 32" and you can't move anything large up and down the stairs so I'm going to open up the entrance a bit and widen the stairs; I think it's a very important step and also a good time to do it. Yes I'm paying for it. It's somebody else's design and I have to modify and finish it to suit my taste.

I have to try more whites on the walls, I'm heading home again in May for 10 days and will hopefully be able to pick a paint color at that time, the stairs should be changed by then and the bathroom done. Another big decision coming up is the kitchen cabinets, whew.

I know it has to be a soft white to compliment the pine.

Thank you; the wood ceilings are beautiful; finishing around them is the challenge I have now.

Trimming the edges of the ceiling or wall .. trim types for the a-frame can be rustic and simple . . think angled cuts on plain boards top of window with straight cuts on sill, side trim and base of window. Since your windows are tan frames, paint the trim an off white to match that and go super white on the walls but warm. Still suggesting Simply white walls, bayard blue lower cabinets, maritime white or other off white tan for trim and upper cabinets.

Hmmmm interesting; Construction will be starting again in the couple of weeks; I am really loving the idea of blue on the cabinets or island. I have lots of great ideas, thanks to you all in here, now I have to piece it all together.

Yippee I found it. Why is it so difficult to find this site if I don't comment for awhile. I have to figure out a way to easily get back here. Any suggestions.

Tom started work on the house again May 1st. It's a little fishing village and he is plot operator during snow season. The stairs have all been changed from 35" width to 42". That was a big job. They were not wide enough to bring furniture in and out. There has been a lot of construction but not a lot of cosmetic work done. The kitchen cabinets are ordered and will be installed before I go home on vacation in July. I went with a glazed finish to keep it a bit rustic. I kept light on all the paint because I am not confident in managing color. There will be enough done so I can spend my vacation there this summer. Bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. I didn't get any pictures this visit because nothing has changes since December.

Thank you Flo for helping me get back to this site.

I am attaching a photo of the colours for now and will get pictures when I go home in July. In the meantime I asked mom to get some pictures of the progress, so may have some sooner.

The wood is the aframe ceiling and I added it to the kitchen ceiling as well. The cabinets will be mainly cloud white but glazed finish and the window and rest of trim in the house will be cloud white.. The floor is temporary for now, paint it just to clean it up for the summer. I will decide on the floor when I see the rest of the colours. I cannot put hardwood floors in the house because there is lots of humidity and I am not there to manage it. I live and work on the other side of the country.

The countertop is busy but i think it will be easy to match up the furniture. It's hard to see but it has a nice grey in the countertop so I ordered a dark grey curtains for now. They may be temporary too, will see, just needed blackout curtains because I'm facing south east and there is lots of hot sun coming in them big windows. I look at the colours and think they maybe pretty dull compared to what I wanted but it's easy to change the colours if necessary, I just had to make a decision. Tom, my contractor said he is not answering my calls anymore because every time I call he has to redo something that he thought was finished. Lol

I took all the pine off the walls and just kept it on the aframe ceiling and kitchen. Dry walled the rest. I have not seen it yet but hoping to get some pictures soon.

    Thank you

    Have a great day. Everyday

I like what you are doing, except for the countertop. If you are still going dark blue on island or low cabinets, I don't think that countertop works. Not sure what is available to you, but I would definitely go cooler tones to offset the ceiling etc. Just something to think about. Maybe a quartz in the Calacatta marble look? It has some grey veining and gray veining so would pick up both tones. I will post some ideas for you to consider.

Thank you for recognizing that Flo. I had to take the island out of the plans and go with a u shape kitchen. The kitchen is right at the top of the stairs coming up to main level and the island was too crowded for the space. It would have been like a tiny foyer where you don't have room enough to turn around so I had to scrap that idea. Broke my heart.

All of the cabinets will now be cloud white and glazed.

Here is one with warmer veining in Quartz if that is option for you. It is Valente Pearl from Zodiac. Torquay is option, Neve and Calacatta Natura. My concern over the one you showed is it will show as just more wood look. Need some visual relief so think lighter, brighter.

OK I get that so maybe go lighter on countertop too. Check the ideas I posted in Quartz for you when you can.

It sure is beautiful. I agree the countertop I have selected just may be too close to the wood.

So glad you are happy and it does look like heaven!! I do wish you had more lighting over the peninsula in the kitchen. Might be tough at night? Or do you have daylight all year long. You could get a kitchen light that perhaps has more extension and could fit over toward the peninsula? But what a view and love that fan. Just fits your place so well. When are you going to be there permanently or are you now?

Or a track one that uses the one junction box but could be laid out in such a way that it services you countertop, sink and peninsula. Just throwing out ideas for you to consider.

Bridget, libradesigneye has given excellent advice. May I add one suggestion? When you hang your art, consider where the sun shines into your house. I would not hang any important art pieces where they will be hit by direct sunlight. The sun will be slightly different every day through the year. You may hang your art where it gets no direct sunlight this month or next month, but as time passes the sun pattern changes. Just be aware of it and when it shines directly on your art, use window shades or drapes to protect your art from fading until the sun pattern changes again. The location of a mirror can also reflect sunlight directly upon your art, too, so be aware of that.
    Have fun finishing your home!

Thank you all so much: I do need more lighting in the kitchen. I just got a small one put there for now so I would have some light. Flo the aged Bronx lights are gorgeous and just what I was thinking. I need lights for both sides of the fan too, one for living room and dining room and am challenged with that one because it has to blend with the fan. I have the company name somewhere that makes tha fan and I'm sure they will have lights to blend.

I do not have many walls for art. There is a lot of Windows. My paintings will not be exposed to any light, they will go on the southeast wall facing back of house.

It will be 2 years before I will permanently move into my house. I'm home on vacation now and got to stay there for the first time.

The fan is oil rubbed bronze finish so I need to keep the flow for living room and dining room lights.

Got the deck on this year. Need to do something with the stairs, the railing leading up to loft and a fireplace. I will have an electric fireplace, I think the wood is just too messy and dusty.

If I had somebody to decorate my house I would not be afraid of color. Decorating it myself, I am terrified of color. I think the color will come when I get living room furniture. Will see I guess.

It has been an experience for sure.

    Still lots to do.

Dont have the loft lower level touched yet and dont know what to do.
