It looks like there is open floor space behind the TV setup instead of a solid wall. If that isn't the case, the first thing I would do is to remove the top surrounding the TV. An even better solution would be to replace that setup with the two cabinets that are by the front door, wall mounting the TV between them. I understand you may not have the wall space to do that. Remove the tiny lamp in the corner behind the sectional and get an arc floor lamp to hover over a wood and glass coffee table. Add color with pillows and upholstery on the dining seating.

It is not fun to comment AFTER you have made all your changes and worked so hard. My main comment would be to add a light gray rug with some geometric design to anchor your space. The TV unit is more kitchen/country style while everything else seems more modern. Is it new? If not I would replace with console in darker wood and clean lines. I commend you on your efforts.

Flow is nice. I would add a rug and remove the ottoman. Also, relocate the little plant stand next to the tv unit. The unit is sticking into the walking space and the stand just adds to that.

You have done a very nice job.

The flow is fine. The dining table works beautifully....but it is the IDENTICAL color as your floor (which is fine). To get some separation from the wood floor to the wood table, you can add an area rug underneath the dining table.

Personally, I think your lounge area can handle a coffee table + area rug rather than an ottoman. And the large-pattern floral print for the ottoman would be perfect as an area rug underneath the dining table.

You are very close to finishing this space. A couple more large area rugs (one for the sectional and one for the dining table) and a coffee table and you are pretty much done.

A chandelier should be approximately 30" above the table top. Placemats are more "modern" which suits your basic looks. You could add some color with placemats and then pick up that color on a couple pillows for the sofa. A rug can help bring some interest in as well. It will also break up all the wood flooring. I would put the rug in the living room area. I'm not crazy about rugs under dining tables. Just hard to keep clean, especially in smaller spaces. But some of the "indoor/outdoor" carpets are pretty nice and can take a beating and easier to vacuum and clean, so that might be something to consider. Mix up textures too. Soft, fluffy pillows will help soften the leather of the sofa, and a rug that is soft and perhaps shaggy is a texture the rooms could benefit from. Hope that helps as you shop for items.

I don't know if the dining room chandelier is new but you could add some more interest by buying a new one? Something long and rectangular in shape (mimic table shape) and modern. You might not be able to lower the one you have because whoever installed it, probably cut the wire which means you can't lower it without rewiring fixture, which could cost more than a new fixture. So, think about that. Your living room sofa is very contemporary in style, your dining table and chairs are modern, so I would keep that style going. I will post a couple of ideas.

$310 - 47.4" long and has length of 65.3" which seems like great size for your table. Has modern chrome look with some crystals for a little modern bling. Simple design would work really well above your table. The current fixture is not right for your space at all, so I hope you can change that out. This is a very reasonable price for what you get with this type look.

This is another style that is modern, with some crystal (small crysal bases of candle lights) but would work well with size. You would have to confirm the size, because I am guessing about your table size.

There are lots of great looking pieces out there that would really amp up your look. Highly recommend you shop around. You can search on Houzz "chandeliers, contemporary, then select the rectangular one and see what is out there." You can "save" ones you like in an "idea book" on Houzz and then look together and see if you both can agree on one that has the look and pricing you are happy with. Best part of design is great lighting!

I think replacing the chandelier into a more modern chandelier, will make a big change in the total look of the space.

You can use art of course, colored and metallic glass pieces, lamps, magazines on coffee table or large books with scenes and colors you like, pillows (go to etsy.com for ideas, several make pillows and if you contact them directly, they will do custom sizes) that is what makes a room shine. Did you get a table for eating area? Did you get a console for the TV?

Hi @flomangan, yes we already a console for our new TV and it is huge cause our ceiling is 9foot as per @decoenthusiaste behind our tv we are not able to knock down the wall cause there is stairs going to another floor. Kindly see photo.. I hope you guys can see the floor plan.. the door by the cappuccino cabinet behind the beige sectional is a balcony.. not our main door.

Sorry Anne I was confusing you with another poster! I realize you have your TV unit and dining table. Same applies (except for those comments). The way you get "color" is through a rug, accessories, tablescape and your light fixture.

Look around your place and find a particular object you love. A pitcher, and bowl, a painting a picture anything that you love. Then post that. We can take that and see what accent colors you already lean to. go into your closet and select a dress you love (not a beige or black one!) one with print and color and post that if you can't find anything else. I have a feeling you don't have any color! Maybe the TV unit is the color? But that isn't a color for "accents". Try that.

I am running behind. everything is good. actually I fell down my newly wood stairs right on my tail bone bouncing with all my body weight 3 flights of steps no where else but my tail bone. couldn't laugh, troubled when had to cough, walking up and down stairs, hard to pick up thing that had dropped to the floors.. sign*** sorry.. managed to get to the office, but once I get home I will double ck thanks for keeping up with me and helping me greatly appreciated..

we have slipped a few times, but was manageable to hold on the railing. do you guy have any good ideas to make our wood stairs not as slippery??? yes until I really fell on my butt. it really hurts so much! don't want this to happen to anyone else so will need to prevent. rug??? ruff tape??? plastic runner?? which will look better?

Oh no. that is terrible. My oldest son had a similar situation and feel too. Just have to carpet them with a runner. Anything else looks bad IMO.

Carpet runner on stairs is a good place to add some pop. You can ask to have two large area rugs bound from the same carpet used as the runner: one for the kitchen table and one for the sectional. Because, as you have discovered, matchy-matchy = boring-boring.

Lovely....but boring. Your eye is craving some, some movement or some interesting texture. That's what area rugs, runners and soft furnishings do. Until you put them down, you will continue to feel "blah" about your space.

You have too much beige and too much greige. Pick something that is a lot more fun. You are already complaining about too much "matchy matchy"...so why would you match another element and then complain about it later. And paint will change whereas carpets and runners will go a lot longer than a wall colour.

You have a colour PALETTE...in that palette you have HUNDREDS of choices. Find your list of colours and go shopping for fun carpet that can be used for both a runner and bound into area rugs. Like two birds one stone type of thing.

Use it as an ACCESSORY. Like an area rug....accessory. Accessories add fun and punch and pop and wow factors. Beige is boring. Greige is beige in a depressed state (gray). You want something livelier....so go ahead and find something livelier. Take your colour palette with paint swatches/etc and go carpet shopping. Two birds. One stone.

Accessory. Not matchy-matchy.

New upholstery on the ottoman would help. That is the only way we are going to "like" it. The pattern is PERFECT as an area rug (because you have things sitting on the pattern covering it up). As an "in your face; no where to hide ottoman" it is not in a happy place. Reupholstry is one way to make it work. Or you find MORE of the fabric (please don't) and use LOTS OF IT...so that the ottoman has a reason for "being". Right now it is the odd man out and is mucking up a lot of your work.

Area rug pattern = yes. Ottoman pattern = no. I would use the red blanket to cover up most of the ottoman. The pattern needs to be covered up somehow. Sorry but that's where it stands with the Ottoman.

Hey...maybe your bedroom needs an ottoman at the foot of the bed. That would be the PERFECT place for this partner-purchase. Let him stub his toes on it for a few years in the bedroom to ensure he keeps purchases like this to a minimum. But I digress.

What about the stairs and the runner? Any new ideas there?

I also don't like the ottoman and would have preferred a smaller round one or table. One way to cover some of the pattern is to place a solid tray on it. Pick a color from the ottoman. I would do neutral but you might want the red.

I do love your sectional, since we bought a similar one to seat our five and visiting family in our family room. :-) I used texture to liven up the space. The gray and gold are pillow covers from Ikea, the pattern cover was super cheap on Ebay.

As of right now- this is our living room with a open concept over looking from our kitchen.. we will go to ikea this weekend to get some covers for the ottoman, pillow covers, big trays for placing on the ottoman.. please don't be afraid of giving your thoughts on colors and textures.. we are really appreciated!!! If you like the reds and golds, look for items that have the two tones in them or can be combined. Also, look for a companion tray for your dining room table. Be careful to put little felt pads on anything you put on your table.

@Flo Mangan what are companion tray and put little felt pads? Is it not place little felt pads?? when we move to our new house we threw away our glass on our dining room table we now regret doing that. it cost us 500 to get it costume cut and delivered.

Maybe a round wooden tray, the color of the wood on the TV unit or your dining table. A tray with cutout for hands would be nice. Hobby Lobby and Target usually have something nice. I like Nate Berkus for your room. Have your husband sit with his feet up on the ottoman to see how much room you have for a tray. Got to make sure comfort is maintained.

Companion tray = similar trays for both areas. Maybe one round and the other a long rectangle but similar styles.

Trays from ZGallerie are very reasonable and nice size for setting a cup of coffee, yet leave room for feet on ottoman. They have others also. Watch for sales.

For continuity, I would like to see a stool with a chair back like your dining chairs. See if the manufacturer of your dining chairs makes a version that is a stool for such an occasion.

The stool you have sitting there (I'm assuming for sizing purposes) does not work.
