We went with a dark Java brown

None of your photos shows the cabinet sample in the same frame as the floor -- it seems to go with the counter, so my concern is that it be creamy enough to go with the floor as well. If it is, then you've found the magic color. I'm not sure I'd have believed that the counter and floor could be meshed, but if they can, the result should be gorgeous.

Can you tell me the specific brand and color?

The cabinets should be a darker wood. Not more cold grey. The room desperately needs the warmth of wood.

We were worried about that but were hoping dark on the island and butler pantry would give enough warmth. And maybe a rug or two. Given that we have to paint and there are lots of cabinets, do you have a dark color paint to suggest? Or would you consider dark on bottom and white up top?

I'd leave it alone before I'd paint it. Brown painted surfaces are flat and uninteresting compared to the varied beauty of natural wood. White or grey would just be a big mistake here without wood floors to warm it up.

Can't afford the $20K for new cabinets and the builder grade "spice" I have there now really doesn't show natural wood beauty and doesn't match what we've picked. There's a reason I couldn't do wood in the kitchen due other wood and carpet in the house and one large great room.

I'd go gray. Light almost white or a darker color. Just make sure it has no green or blue undertones. Pick you wall color at the same time or you could drive yourself crazy. Wall could be anything but maybe the opposite of the cabinets. Dark vs light. Or a color. Depends on color of the adjoining rooms.

Sorry--I didn't read your post close enough to see that you are mixing white with dark wood. Your floor looks like it leans gray close up, but looks warmer in the photo with the counter, tile and wall. Your backsplash is cooler than your floor. I would definitely follow your instincts to avoid the creamier whites.

There is a really good Houzz thread on whites you may find helpful. BM White Dove may be a good option in this case. It has the slightest touch of gray but looks like a very neutral white. I think it would compliment your darker island cabinetry and work well with your grays without reading as blue or gray or stark.

I'll check it out for sure! A dilemma that I have is that my house (except for the bedrooms) is one large great room. So color in the kitchen will be the color everywhere.

Oh I meant the green for you cabinets, but it would also work on the walls. If it was on the wall, I would use a regular white like BM white dove and then choose a complimentary color of the green for the island so it all goes together.

My house is one large great room too--and my kitchen is leaning more gray--even though my white cabinetry is a creamier white--selected to go with the wood tones in the great room, including a knotty pine ceiling and Brazilian Walnut floors. Instead of using two different woods in the kitchen, we used two different granites--an Antique Brown, which has some warmth and Niveous, which reads more taupe than I would have preferred--beautiful, but is a bit cool next to the warm woods. I'd focus on what looks good for the kitchen and then figure out how to tie in the other areas, which are probably more changeable. Are you planning to keep the yellow paint?

Use espresso (or whatever dark color you choose) just for the island. If you do the butler's pantry also it will be too disjointed.

It can get difficult with the large great room! We have cathedral ceilings too but carpet in there. Currently SW whole wheat paint in kitchen and great room. In the pic below you can see the reds and warm colors I currently have. The kitchen was to be the start of an entire color change.

A stain will look better than a dark paint.

You have a very neutral palate. Did you just paint SW whole wheat or are you planning to change it?

The cabinets are the same cabinets I have with white tile floor and so tired of them and looking to paint/stain and upgrade to granite...I am interested in what color you decide :)

Fantasy brown granite has been ordered and we are finally getting out cabinets in today -- my question is I originally went with black cabinets and I'm thinking i should have gone with white -- does anyone ever done - black with fantasy brown granite - if so can you please post a photo - I'm second guessing everything lol

What did everyone end up doing as far as cabinet color? I'm in the same dilemma myself. Builder grade honey colored cabinets.
