Help with master shower

We are building a new master bath. The shower is 8'5" by 4"2". I'm trying to decide what kind of plumbing fixtures in and where would it be best to put the niches, bench,

and shower head. I know that I want the handles directly across from the door so that I won't get wet turning on the shower.

One thing to keep in mind in large showers is that they can become cold in colder climates. I love the look of walk in, door-less showers, but if you keep the house cool the shower never seems to warm up. As long as the water is running you're fine, but then when you turn it off it can get cold fast.

There are decorative "assist bars" that are attractive and don't look like institutional "grab bars" ... Delta makes a line of hand held shower bars, shelves and decorative curved bars that are very reasonable, and there are some higher end ones. We are adding a hand held shower bar that is decorative and ADA approved, as well as some other fixtures that are "assist bars" (not ADA approved but rated for the same weight). As we age we know these are in place and ready for use, and we will be using them (because they are there) well before we actually need them.

I would do the following:

- Lose the door -- in such a generous shower, you can do without it.

- Place a small moveable stool near the door.

- Build in the niches under what I think is a window -- and put them on the "interior wall" so they will only be visible from INSIDE the shower. Yeah, they always look so pretty in pictures ... less pretty when they're full of mis-matched shower goods.

- One main shower head (with removable hand shower) at the far end, away from the door. Plus a rainshower in the middle /maybe slightly towards the main shower head.

- Definitely yes to your idea about the controls being near the door. I would've said to the right of the door ... but I wouldn't quibble with straight ahead of the door.

- Towel bars or hooks just outside the shower door ... between the shower and what I think is the tub. This'd set you up to take the shower with your right hand as you exit the shower.

I agree. I live in Southern California so it's not freezing, but I like the idea of a shower being closed in. There is nothing worse than being cold while in the shower or when getting out! I am wondering where to put the shower heads so that it won't be cold and I'm not sure where would be best for the bench.

That's a very large shower so be sure you don't mind being less warm as they can be cold.

Is that a window in the shower on the long wall on the left?

Thanks for all the great ideas. Here is the shower completed. We even were able to put robe/towel hooks at the far end of the shower and they don't get wet whether we are using any of the fixtures. Love it!

That looks great! I love that you can hang your robes/towels in the shower.
