Update kitchen on a budget

We would like to update our kitchen but need to spend as little as possible. The countertops are granite and while I cannot stand the color/pattern, I can't bring myself to replace them since we don't have the funds for new countertops. So... I think we paint or stain the existing cabinets and add a backsplash. But what color would tie the cabinets in to the ugly counters (making them less noticeable)? And how would you approach a backsplash? The counter seems busy to me, so I wouldn't want the backsplash to make it worse. For what it's worth, we would eventually like to go stainless with the appliances but that may be down the road. Thoughts? Pics would be appreciated!

It might help to explain what you don't like about the granite.

I had a similar look once with bronze-green counters which I liked - when we moved in walls were painted a soft coffee, which was fine.... are your walls in good condition? or you just want to paint?

How many ceiling lights are there? Your knobs look nice, and incidentally, current.

Reclaimed wood shelves would bring a fresh look - maybe over the sink.

Your own items, not meant to clutter, should add a good thing... ?! :)

Take off a small door. Bring it to a good paint store. ( I love the helpful and knowledgeable staff at Sherwin Williams). Find a paint color that you love that works with your cabinets. Be sure to bring a good clear photo of your granite counter top with you.

If money is tight, paint the kitchen first. You might find just the right color and decide NOT to paint the cabinets.

Be advised, painting kitchen cabinets involves a lot of time and energy. If you really want to paint the cabinets, get the best paint and advice before starting the project.

Thanks, everdebz! Our granite has too much brown for my taste and just feels really busy and so it's hard to tell when it's clean. I prefer a simpler look and tend toward white cabinetry (but I figure that won't work with these counters). We actually do have our own stuff here now, but my kitchen's not clean enough for pics right now, so I grabbed the old realtor photos. We have made a couple of updates (installing a good/microwave, for instance). I like the idea of shelving over the sink. Thanks!

Hey - thanks for grabbing those photos. ;-)

Ok - you're not into brown - I am cause it's good with earth tones, and not necessarily the dark versions, but faded tomato,etc...

Missed your other request for adjoining rooms. This kitchen is closed off so not much need to worry about open concept painting.

So far I've tried to grab transitional, informal items that have appeal to you - that's my suggestion... and good 'luck'!

If you have your cabinets painted (and I highly recommend spending the money to have them done, not do them yourself), you might be happier with your countertops. I would remove the granite backsplash and either use a plain (absolutely NO pattern) subway tile or beadboard backsplash. The breadboard is more budget friendly and also able to be painted any color in case you want to play around with adding color.

The fact that you have granite is actually a great start, we just need to coordinate it better so you love it. I would put a really dark stain (almost black) on the bottom cabinets (or you could paint them black) and paint the upper cabinets white or off white - two tones cabinets are a very updated look. Then remove the short granite backsplash and replace it with a solid tan glass or ceramic tile that goes all the way up to the bottom of your upper cabinets. What you're trying to do is is pull the colors of the natural granite. Bring samples of tile home so you can see what ties in best. Here are some examples of what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the extra photos. Some thoughts:

--Again, if the kitchen is part of an adjoining space then you need to tell us that. The paint of adjoining spaces should be the same as the kitchen so it all flows harmoniously.

--If you do a subway tile, pick one of the almost peachy tans from the granite but go very pale on it. It should be about the same shade as the floor so they tie together.

--Then paint the top cabinets deep white--avoid stark whites--that is compatable with the granite and the bottom cabinets black (You could also do the uppers in the same pale tan pulled from the granite and floor. Hard to say.)

--Get nickel cup drawer pulls and nickel cabinet pulls. The Martha Stewart line at Home Depot is good quality and very affordable.

--Eventually, then, get stainless appliances. What you have doesn't match, but it's fine for now.

    Here's a white/black kitchen with tan tile.
