When to harvest late-planted shallots?

I visited a nursery in late July and they were selling seed potatoes & shallots half-price, so I figured I'd give them a try. I've never grown shallots before; the package directions said the shallots could be planted in spring or fall, but other than that were a little vague.

Anyway, I planted them, and they look good but the leaves still are green and show no sign of dying back. We have not yet had a frost (we are 2 weeks beyond the average first frost here in central Ohio and none in the forecast for at least the next 5 days!).

Should I plan to pull them when frost threatens, or should I leave them in the ground (a raised bed) and simply mulch them with chopped leaves? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Digdirt2, that's a very useful link, thanks! If I had known how to search I'd have done it myself! Years ago, before Houzz took over GW, the search option was plainly seen. But before posting my query (and several other times as well) I looked for a way to search the forums & still do not see it. Where do I find the search option??
