Bathroom Color Conundrum

My husband and I have recently moved into my grandmother's house that was passed down to me. We're saving up for some bigger updates, but are trying to make the house our own in the meantime. The original tile is staying for now, but I would love suggestions for how to work with the yellow color. I recently painted the walls SW Repose Gray, because it matched the gray in the shower curtain I found. I don't love it and am wondering if I should have gone with a deeper color. The first pic is the room as it is now. The flooring is white hex. The remaining pics are what I've been fooling around with this morning.

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I think the Repose Gray is lovely with that shower curtain. Are you planning on changing the shower curtain? If yes, perhaps you should do that before selecting the new paint colour. The blue paint colours go nicely with the yellow and white tiles. Of the blues shown, I prefer either Anchor Gray or Hale Navy (but would depend on what shower curtain you use).

I like the tile. It looks to be in good shape. I like gray and yellow together, but not that gray. Maybe something deeper? I don't really care for gray walls, so I'm not much help. I wouldn't let a shower curtain determine my wall color though. I'd find a wall color I really like and then look for a shower curtain. But I like white shower curtains, so again I'm not much help.

I think of all the possibilities shown, Repose Gray is the most attractive. I really like it - it's such a soft and pretty look - but that could be the filtered sunlight coming through in the photo and it may look completely different in person. Can you share more photos of the space? I'm not really digging any of the blues.

You seem to want blue. Personally, I wouldn't use a blue because it accentuates the yellow.

I'd probably paint it a purple or a brown and then use sharp white shower curtain and towels. some ideas

I like the Hale Navy best. Change shower curtain to white & use all white accents.

I'm digging the Old Navy, but probably because I hate gray and I hate brown more. :) I'm also a sucker for blue & yellow together.

I love the yellow accent tile!

Thank you so much for all the suggestions! I'm not necessarily sold on a blue, it was just the only other direction I could think to go in. Tibbrix, I really like some of your suggestions. I'll have to show my dh tonight, as well as take another photo of the opposite wall.

In our first home 45 years ago I painted our yellow ceramic tile with white paint. It was a two step process, might have been epoxy paint. I bought it at Sherwin Williams, it wasn't hard, and I was very glad I did it. The tile and grout were in good condition and looked very much like yours. The result was smooth and shiny, and it was still fine when we moved 10 years later. Good luck to you.

What about a warm, very pale sky blue? The dark colors just don't appeal to me w/ that light tile, making it look washed out, IMO. The repose grey seems dull. The aqua color reflecting from the window in the photos is suggesting pale blue-green to me.

I had a similar problem w/ old tile in our 50s kitchen, so I used the Behr color tools @ Home Depot to find a coordinating white for the cabinets. I found the 2 paint colors corresponding to our tiles & looked @ the suggested palette to find my perfect shade of white.

I figure they pay people to spend time, expertise on creating these coordinated palettes, so why not take advantage? It's free.

I agree with Carol - I think the dark colors are too stark with the pastel yellow of the tile (which I like very much, by the way). If you go with a softer shade, though, I think you have to be careful lest the space end up looking like a baby's nursery (assuming that's not what you want for the bathroom). Maybe something along the lines of SW Sea Salt or Rainwashed?

I like gray, teal, and this mustard color Tibbrix posted..actually both of them: 5 and 6)) Cheerful and unexpected. Like 8 and 9, for more mellow atmosphere. ah, and I like the original tiles...:) also, much better dilemma than when you have very blotchy surfaces with tens of colors with them, that you still have to work around..

I think it looks nice as is...but wow a lot of other colors do look good too with that accent yellow tile.

    I think I agree with Oakley. :)

It looks like the lighter tile is creamy. I would pick a color close to that or slightly lighter. It will be cheerful and yummy. Plus a white shower curtain.

Our house in St Louis had Yellow Cab yellow tile with black trim. It was a very small powder room, but lathe and plaster construction and so small the toilet and washbasin would have had to be removed in order to remove the tile. Young, poor, cha ching! Just not going to happen.

I bought an epoxy spray kit and painted the tile white. Was it perfect? No - mainly due to no space to move in that thing - but it sure looked a heck of a lot better than that yellow tile!

Since you eventually intend to replace the tile, you have little to lose. Paint it and then use whatever colors you prefer.

I love the tile in your bathroom, I have to agree, gray would be really pretty, just not that gray. I'd try to find a silvery gray instead.

I agree with Oakley too. The other colors don't relate to anything and they just seem forced. Match up the tile as best that you can. The shower curtain is still okay.

I happen to like your first choice. Maybe it doesn't look good in person but it look fine from where I am sitting. On my monitor is looks more like a griege.

I love the yellow tiles, they look to be in great shape, so I really hope you won't paint over them! I personally love blue and yellow together, I had nearly identical tiles with a blue floor in my last kitchen. My favorite blues posted are Anchor Grey or tibbrix's #1 or 2.

I like yellow and grey together, but I think if you want to go grey it needs to be richer. Maybe consider taking the Repose to 150% or 200%, that way it can still coordinate with the lovely shower curtain?

I like the grey you have, or the idea of matching the white tile.

Dark colors seem disconnected now, because they've been photo-shopped into a room that's been styled/decorated without taking these paint colors into account. Style it differently when paint is on the walls-and nothing will seem chopped or disconnected.

This room can be taken many direction, it can be very calm and serene, or very fun and bold, tiles or no tiles. Don't see a problem with the tile unless one hates pale yellow of course.

(Strangely-it's me lol..but not by itself, only with a black combo)

If you don't care for the yellow tile, I would paint it. It's doable.

Can you post a pic of your shower curtain straight on?

I actually prefer the first gray color of all colors posted.

I change shower curtains a couple times each year, so I would also match your paint to your lighter tile.

You'd never be able to get the painted tile to look like the shiny whiter tile, so you could do a deeper saturation of your lighter tile.

I LOVE the yellow tile and I'm leaning towards the teal but a bit lighter! Please don't paint it, it doesn't hold up and you'll have a bathroom full of painted tile with nothing at all to say about it. Check out retrorenovation.com for ideas on mid-century bathrooms. What a cheery way to start the day!

What about painting to match the yellow or white tile? Less colors, instead of more. Then add a shower curtain & towels you love.

I think the first pic is lovely. The shower curtain is kind of a soft pattern and it just seems to work so nicely with your tiles.

Wow, thank you so much for all the suggestions! I'm completely overwhelmed now. :) The yellow tile is in excellent condition, so it will be staying as is. Before I painted the gray, the walls were white and I just felt like it was bleh, in there. We used SW Sea Salt in our master bedroom and I love that color. I think it could potentially work in here as well. However, I really like 5 and 6 that Tibbrix posted. Although, not sure I could get my husband on board with either of them. I'm having difficulty deciding if I want it to have a more serene vibe or fun and quirky.

Seeing how small the bathroom is, if it were mine, I'd definitely go with a bold color and hang a good-sized piece of framed artwork on the wall to the right of the sink. Bold colors work really well on small wall area and in low-light rooms.

White shower curtain and towels, take the Levelor blind off the window and put a fun window film on the glass instead

    lol!

I think it's a charming room now. And if you repaint it-will still be charming (or fun and quirky)

If you decide, after all, to go with window film glass idea which I love-don't forget to check the Surface View..they have so many cool options, from very subtle like lace, to very statement-like as in imagery.

Oh gosh, that is such a cute space! I still like it just as it is, but if I were going to make a change, I now think I'd do as suggested above and paint the walls white (which might not be easy, as the perfect white can be difficult to find), and bring in some bolder touches with a piece of statement art on the wall.

Lol, I didn't notice the fixtures were yellow, too.

Then I take back comment about painting the tile.

Put a pretty curtain in there and I think it will look smashing! :-)

I just love your bathroom, and I'm glad you're keeping all the original details, it is in amazing shape, and so charming. Seeing more of it, I am thinking again a deeper grey, taking the Repose to 150%-200%

I would try to match the paint with the white tile, as well. Use grey acessories... Pick a grey that is in your shower curtain... if you love the shower curtain. Grey towels & mat? I would also do a different window treatment. You can buy the window film at Home Depot. How expensive was the shower curtain? Buy another to use as fabric for a window treatment? Just tossing out some ideas. I think painting a color above the tile seems to cut the room in half. It is a cute bathroom and the tile looks to be in good shape! Post some pics when you decide

I had a similar dilemma at my old house! First I painted the blah white walls a bold purplish blue, similar to some of your examples shown above. It was heinous and accentuated the yellow tiles rather than make them recede (which I think is what you want too). Then I painted the walls a light grayish green, similar to Sea Salt but lighter, and it was such a vast improvement.

I think your bathroom tiles are a brighter yellow (mine were harvest gold), but hopefully this example helps. I used a white shower curtain and towels with some turquoise accessories and it made the less-than-ideal bathroom way more tolerable. Good luck!

I would definitely paint it the same white as the tile, that way you can us any accent color/colors you like.

I like the gray but I would paint the room a color to neutralize it.

To me a perfect color would be SW Antique White, it's a warm creamy white with a tic of yellow. Or, ask SW to lighten it by 50%. This color takes other color pops well so you would have endless choices on art or accessories.

First picture is SW Antique White and second picture is the master bath with the Antique White cut by 50%. I put a yellow candle on the counter to show how it would look.

    Different light.

I like the grey you painted it - I think it's lovely and calm. I would emphasize the grey/yellow more with your accessories (maybe remove the things from the toilet?), a cool window treatment, towels and art next to the mirror.
