What material is behind the siding?

Wondering how water will affect the siding on the backside.

Could we do a hardy backing and then paint it black?

There are a lot of materials out there, we like this one - http://vaproshield.com/products/revealshield-

In this case they had a finished, painted wall there for some time before the rainscreen was added so you could build it as a typical wall using hardie or t1-11 and paint it black and then add the rainscreen on top. It is a little bit of overkill though.
