personally ... if its as bad as you say.. i would go systemic ... see second link ... insure whatever product you choose.. its labeled for indoors .. you only live thru one pandemic of FGs .. lol ...been there.. done that ...

learn to let your potting media dry before watering ... prevention is a lot easier.. than cure ...

Your description certainly matches that of a fungus gnat infestation. The adults are not attracted to vinegar like fruit flies. These insects are a product of your overwatering and that peaty potting medium.

Fungus gnats feed on organic bits and pieces. When the population is high, they will begin feeding on the tender tips of roots. But their presence always means that there is or has been an excess of moisture in their environment.

Systemic chemicals are not the answer for fungus gnats. Ever. The larvae can be controlled by a solution containing a biological larvicide called Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, readily found in any garden center as a control for mosquitoes, a relative. Apply the Bt-i on watering day. The bacterium adheres to the peat and organic matter and will be ingested by the larvae.

The pesky adults don't live very long. Once the larvae are killed by the Bt, the problem will be temporarily improved.

In the long run, however, you need to select a very porous, fast draining potting medium and you need to change your overwatering ways. Fungus gnats are semi-aquatic and cannot breed in a drier environment.

Look for mosquito dunks at the garden center. Crumble one up in your watering can, let it dissolve for a day or so, then use that water on watering day. Use it again for several watering days, but don't water extra. You still need to let the plants dry out.
