The gray with the orange border is really nice! I think it will look great with the color story you're setting up.

With the darker walls and light floor, you need to balance the two. Add a rug that can hold its own against the gray while giving a nod to the light floor. I like something like this for your room:

Agree that your room will benefit with an area rug that includes shades of the light flooring and deep wall colour.

Combining light and dark, will nicely ground the room and spread out the values so that they are not viewed all in one place.

This still allows for you to add another completely different accent colour of your choice, such as orange, for accessories.

Another tip when perusing area rugs, an allover pattern or one that does not include a medallion, gives you more leeway when placing your furniture. Sometimes a medallion in the center doesn't always end up in the center, or conflicts with coffee table placement.

Does this room need to accommodate TV viewing?

The size of your sofa for that wall (in the picture anyways) feels fine. It is more the chunkiness that is overwhelming in a small space.

A similar size sofa as existing, will look much better in a style that is more streamlined, with slimmer arms, and flatter back cushions.

A couple tips: A sofa on legs helps a room feel more spacious due to the fact that your eye is allowed to see the floor below.

A sofa that goes right down to the floor, looks like it takes up more room, because it stops your eye.

In a small room - less is more.

Larger pieces but fewer, as opposed to smaller pieces and many, is what makes a room feel calmer, nicely proportioned and larger.

The area UNDER your window (where ladder is) could be ideal for a console or storage piece. If the piece you choose has no shelves or storage underneath, you can fill that space with attractive (large) baskets or ottomans that can be moved into the seating area when you have more company than usual.

Otherwise the ones that come with shelving provide a nice area for a pretty key bowl, dog leash basket, several books which always cozy up a space, and a few accessories that mean something to you.

You can see from the attached photos below, that these pieces are diverse in style, but they all fulfill the same FUNCTION. The most fun is that you get to select a style that really speaks to YOU, and allows flexibility to suit individual budgets and styles.

Wow, love that council idea, especially for ottoman storage! We just ordered a couch with legs, glad to hear that was the right move. We did buy a rug too. I'm not 100% sold but my boyfriend got SO excited for it. Any ideas on accent chairs? Was thinking maybe an orange color. Do you do two of the same or different?

Well, I have until Tuesday to decide on the couch for sure. The one rug is staying. Will need another rug to go under a dining table. Also need chairs and window/door treatment (curtains/blinds/shades?). The dining area and living space are in the same room so I'm not totally sure how to mesh the two and still establish seperate areas

If you go with the rug that you posted, consider that as the highest pattern in the room for visual stimulation. Also consider the sofa tucks/buttons as a soft pattern.

In the picture that you show them together, it feels that they play nicely together. You can even consider the diamond shapes in the rug as echoing the tuck/button in the sofa. So good start!

Moving forward, for other choices coming up, tread more softly with solid coloured nubby and textured materials, very soft pattern, and nice shapes for furniture and accessories.

This does not mean boring, as you can certainly have great colour or shape injected into the space, keeping the guidelines above.

Area rugs are more often changed out, as opposed to furniture, as years pass. So you can calm down the room at any time with a more neutral rug. (than you would add pattern to your throw pillows to make up for the lack of visual interest).

If you have loved FOREVER and know that you will not tire of it, go for a pair of orange occasional chairs. To answer your question: it looks nice to have 2 identical chairs, in same colour. In a larger room if a third chair is required, than you could introduce a different style and colour.

If you do not want to commit to orange chairs, select a colour similar to your sofa. Does not have to match exactly, can be lighter or darker shade, but needs to have the same undertone as the sofa material. You can than add orange throw pillows to the neutral chairs.

Just as with the consoles, you can have fun selecting a chair that speaks to YOU. You will have your room dimensions with you, including walking space for clearance to dining room, so that they are not too large and can have a small table between them.

Just ordered some orange chairs :) debating on pulling the trigger on the Essex council that was posted as well. Did you mean the orange rug would go well with the triangle one? Seriously stressing about the second rug for the dining space. Here's some photos (coffee table not staying) - where the bean bag is I will put a dining table.

Don't get a rug for the dining room. If you have a rug it needs to be large enough that the chairs can be pulled all the way out and still keep all four legs on the rug. Since your dining area looks like a walkway, it is probably better to keep the floor clear. When you have dining furniture and art you won't miss the rug. Your living area rug needs to be pulled out in front of the sofa legs. It is too small to be used under the sofa. When you get the chairs, place them just to the outside of the rug also.

Will do with the couch. The dining table is small. I measured and a 4x6 rug should fit without impending the walkway and allowing the chairs to be on the rug. I can't afford to get a new table just yet and it is basically the color of the floor so was hoping to break up with a rug.

Consoles come in different heights, they look best if it they are not taller than the window.

If you can't find one short enough, a seating bench with baskets below could be next best thing.

Having a second rug will chop up your space, try throwing a blanket or something down there to see for yourself what it does to your space.

hard to see your colors, but i think this is right? i really recommend not one color if you must have one. if you go one color go to the local big floor store. they often ends hemmed for less than $100 that way you do not feel bad if you have to donate in a year.
