Want a kitchen island without seating

Is there any more to this?

Not sure what the issue is. If you want a kitchen island without seating, just have the island built with a countertop that is cut to the size of the island (well, a wee bit larger - maybe an inch or so on each side).

    So have one

This can be done. Easily. Are you asking for help? Are you looking for a contractor?

our kitchen designer scoffed at the idea of a kitchen island without seating. But we have a nice sunny attached dining area, and we could really use the additional cabinet space. I am toying with a concept of back-to-back 24 and 15 inch deep cabinets, and then an overhang for seats on the 15 inch side. we could store things like the icecream maker, blender, mixer that aren't used very often on the eating side of the island. Thoughts?

That's my island... 24" cabs on business side, 15" cabs on serving side, and some overhang for stools. The 15" cabs store seasonal items that I access infrequently. The island is practically a full Quartz slab. We love the size and storage.

We designed the kitchen for big family gatherings where multiple people join in to prep and others want to hang out in the kitchen. The island is very functional for that. Regrets? Not thinking through the trim thoroughly in advance. I'm going to have the island sides redone later. Also, I have nearly 60" walkway between island and perimeter... I could've pulled it in a bit... the great room is plenty spacious though and is not suffering on account of a few inches. HTH.

Thanks! We are planning a somewhat smaller kitchen so I am also trying to conceptualize the size in relation to the cabinets. Photos are helpful.

That island is 9' long. I only have 3 old stools at the moment there. When I get around to buying, I'll get 4 new stools. HTH. Good luck!

this is an old thread, so not sure if anyone will check but I was curious if anyone did go ahead and do an island without seating. To date all of the islands I've had built had seating. In this new remodel where the main room is wide open and includes the living room, dining room and kitchen all in one space I have a ton of seating. A dining room table that seats 12 and a living room that seats 6. there's not a ton of space between the current island (which does have seating), and the back of the living room couch and the end of the dining room table. About 2.5' to 3' It feels really tight. So My idea is to make the island thinner, 24" + 12" cabinets back-to-back and remove the seating overhang. That makes the island more of a space to prep, lay out buffet-style eating and for people to gather (but not sit.) I like the idea of not making it too comfortable for people to sit at my kitchen but rather migrate either to living room or dining room seating during gatherings. has anyone built out an island without seating and were you happy with it?

Hi, can you please share the dimensions of your island as well as the measurements of your island countertop? Thanks!

The island is 25"X64" and the top is 27"X66".

I did not include the kick plate area as it goes in for my feet!!

The space from island top to dishwasher top is 41".

The space from island top to drink station on the left side, that you cannot see, is 45".

I love having the extra space to be able to walk around.

My seating area is just just 6' away, so there is plenty of room to sit.
