Two to three months ago we planted a piece of turmeric rhizome in a container, and now have a pretty nice 5" shoot going.

I'm now wondering how to keep it healthy over the winter. While our area (near Pasadena) is said to have mild winters, I recall many years when it gets down to freezing a couple of nights around new year's. If we're going to be away, I wonder if I should think about bringing it indoors, or rigging it up outside with drip irrigation and an ad hoc greenhouse (plastic sheets and a frame of some kind)?
