Question about finding interior designers

What do interior designers charge typically (range?) What is the best way finding one locally? Are there furniture or other stores that offer this as a complimentary service that you would recommend? Could also use help selecting paint colors...Thanks!

Good advice above on finding local pros.

I don't know about other, smaller outfits. But Ethan Allan supposedly does a consultation (hoping you buy their stuff). I know there are lots o interior designers hooked into this site so I hope you get more responses!
