November 13 blooms

It's still in the mid-70s where I live but predicted to drop this week to the mid-60s. Before they go dormant, here are a few you might enjoy!

Blue For You looking much darker and very red/purple in the cooler weather. He's definitely enjoying the transplant he got into a much sunnier spot.

Koko Loco planted next to BFY finally got out of his pot and is expressing his joy but being constantly in bloom. I'm always checking out all the color variations of this rose.

World War II Memorial Rose - keeps growing and blooming even after a near fatal transplant when I failed to water enough. This rose doesn't produce the pink blush tones as much in cooler weather which I prefer, but it's still a lovely rose to honor those who served in WWII. I always think of my mom and her generation!

Poseidon is a great rose and I may get another one. It makes a lovely contrast with bright colored roses in a vase because the lavender tone is so soft and calming.

Lady Bird Johnson produces some of the biggest, brightest red/orange blooms I've ever seen. I've never been able to capture the true color; the photo below is about 75% accurate, it's still not dark enough. The blooms have a huge number of petals and that open very slowly. As you can see from the top left corner, it tends to blackspot even in my nearly blackspot free garden. Not much fragrance and it gets very tall, but there's something about its vigor and character that I really like.

Nicole Carol Miller looking extremely pale but lovely in her own right. Usually this rose is quite mauve but she really has some very pretty variations.

Fragrant Plum has a bunch of buds and blooms right now as if it were spring. FP prefers cooler temps because it shuts down completely at times during the summer. It's especially happy with lots of water.

Now a few Austins -

Olivia Rose Austin is still blooming and is one of the longest lasting roses, regardless of the temperature.

Happy Child is pumping out buds/blooms like mad right now. HC definitely prefers cooler temperatures. I can never capture HC's true color which is a bright lemon yellow, this photo has too much of a brown undertone.

Scepter'd Isle is nearly done for the year but managed to produce this bloom. This rose seems to like warm but not hot conditions.

I'm waiting for my last Lady Emma Hamilton and William Shakespeare 2000 to bloom in the next couple of days. Hope to post those soon!

I really enjoy your comments. If Olivia lasts in your climate, I know it will last here. 'Lady Bird Johnson' is extremely attractive. Does she always do that light/dark combo in your climate? And gorgeous shot of 'Nicole Carol Miller'!

Irisgal - It's funny you should mention the comments. I just got back tonight from my rose society meeting where one of the topics was successes and failures this past season. It's amazing how different the member's experiences can be with the same rose due to slight differences in our microclimates, even just 5-10 miles away. We all agreed that you never about a rose until you grow it yourself, no matter what others say about how well it did or didn't do for them.

LBJ does do the light/dark combo thing but to different degrees. Some blooms are consistently pinky/orange/red like the one below, but others are more two-toned like the second photo.

Of all my roses, I think this is the one that I have the most difficulty with capturing the color, followed by Fragrant Cloud. Maybe if I got a real camera instead of using an iPhone, it would be easier. Thanks for checking out the photos!

Well, LadyBJ looks good in both pics! All three!! I like that rose. I'm susceptible to this color combo in daylilies too. Which hate our drought conditions. So I'm snooping for a rose.

I also think how people treat their roses, what they take for granted, is often quite different than the next person. "Oh yes, this rose is short." If they pruned like I do (rather, don't) it wouldn't be short.

    Thank you.

Wow!! I'm loving your roses!! Blue For You really stands out - which is odd, cause I don't usually love the semi-double roses. But yours has magic in it!!! I too love all of your LBJ photos!!!! Is there a rose of the above that has a wonderful scent?

    Thanks Carol!

Among the roses above, I gravitate to Happy Child for scent and bright, uplifting personality, even though I'm a pink rose fanatic. I think HC would do very well in the Pacific Northwest, and maybe in your area. It seems to not be bothered by rain, likes to bloom a lot in cool weather, the color is at its best when the sun isn't so strong, and it consistently has a good scent. It's compact which I love but it was discontinued by DA. Phooey on them for dropping such a great rose! I finally got a shot that's a little closer to the true lemon yellow color, less of the brown undertones my camera keeps including.
