Anyone who can do the same price as Ikea is making crapola. Probably from formaldehyde laden cheepchinesecrap ply that is pretty far from actual cabinet grade. Ikea is the absolute cheapest. You don't compete with them without cutting massive corners.

While it's rare that I have to disagree with Sophie over the quality of IKEA cabinets, I have some and they're great, she is again spot on with "You don't compete with them (on price) without cutting massive corners."

Want proof? Go to a big box store and price a sheet of cabinet grade plywood lying in a bunk. You could have a packaged RTA IKEA cabinet for the same price and you haven't even paid for the labor to load it on the truck let alone push it through a table saw and edgebander in a shop where you pay rent and a bill to keep the lights on.

I disagree with you guys. We are building our own cabinets (3/4" ply, full extension, auto close drawer slides) and the total cost for our cabinets is around $1000. Ikea quote was around $6000, Kraftmaid was around $12000.

We found a wood distributor that distributes to the cabinet makers. So you can see that someone could make quite a bit of money by matching the Ikea price and not be cutting corners AND she would have wood cabinets vs the pressed/mdf stuff.

To the OP what does "semi" custom made mean in your quote you got?

He said he buys the cabinets from a local distributor and they are all plywood. I'm doing a lot of work including a bathroom, flooring, all our door, painting exterior and interior and kitchen so he said if we use them he would give us a good deal on the cabinets. He said it would be easier for him to do a the work rather than wait for a seperate installer to put in cabinets and countertops. I'm guessing he's making enough on the rest of the work the cabinets aren't a huge deal but I'm going to call and ask more details to see if they are from china or here and see if I can look at samples.

True. Hubs can only work on them one day a weekend. So it's slow, will take about 5 days total. I'd say that is worth the $5000 savings!

But that's just building them. Finishing cabinets is a whole different trade than building them. Good luck.

I called and they are chinese cabinets. We are going to stick with Ikea. I really love all of the extras and the hardware is so nice with ikea and we still have time to get in on the sale.

They come with a 25 year warranty (personally I would not want the same kitchen for 25 years and received the JD Power rating as having the best overall customer satisfaction!

Ikea is the largest retailer of home goods in the world. They consume wood than anyone else. In other wood, they will be in business if you every need parts.

Many cabinet retailers will tell you the IKEA cabinets are no good because they are flat packed. This is false information. The cabinet retailer is simply attempting to sell you their line of cabinets. They do not have access to the IKEA cabinets.

To prove my point. Have you ever seen cabinets growing and hanging from trees. Well my friend, all Kitchen cabinets are assembled at sometime and somewhere.

Ikea saves on warehousing and especially freight and labor for assembly.

The cabinets are not that difficult to assemble. The cabinets utilize dowels, cam locks, Blum hinges and Blum glides. The drawers are full extension , utilize the full width of your cabinets. They offer many sizes Door dampers and a wide selection colors, finishes and numerous designs.

Do NOT get the IKEA cabinets confused with cheaply built office furniture.

The cabinets are priced fairly
You will have to drive to the nearest store to to place your order and pickup your cabinets. If you new st his, plan on spending a day. If all the cabinets are not available you will most likely need to make a second trip.

If you assembly them correctly you will have a beautiful, extremely well built and functional Kitchen for many years to come.

I would rate IKEA an easy 98 out of of 100.
