It depends on the style of your home and decor. With 10' ceilings most will use regular 8' doors and transom windows used on the exterior windows or doors. In general you will not find many homes with transom windows on the interior, but there is nothing wrong to have them if that is the look you after.

Backtrack to a bit of history, transom windows were placed over the doors and they were capable of opening and closing to move warm air which usually gets trapped near the ceilings and that air was pulled through when the windows were open... it was a way of natural ventilation throughout the house.

In addition transom windows were also used to allow additional natural light to a darker room from the adjoining room which had more windows.
