Starting the New-House Living Room

Hi All,
Looking to start working on the livingroom (finally). The room has half a vaulted cieling (one wall typical height, up to 13 feet or so). There are three windows, however they face North and dont let in much light. Because of this, I am thinking to paint a darker color (darker grey), then light it up with some sconces and possible track lighting. Questions:

1. I would like to do two sconces, then possibly track lighting. Would you put the sconces on the fireplace wall, or on the large wall to the right? Assuming I would put some track lighting up on the other wall (whichever it may be) with some artwork. Not a big fan of track lighting (I think it looks cheap), but it's really the only option for covering a wide wall onto artwork or what-have-you

2. This fireplace is in a terrible spot. How can I break up this wall? I was thinking of doing tile or a stone "column" up to the cieling with shelving all the way up (maybe lighting within the shelvs). Other Suggestions?

3. if I went with darker grey, I will likely used a brushed nickel (silver) finish on all the fixtures. For artwork, possibly use Red as an accent color. Grey/Red curtains on the windows. Agree/disagree?

Other thoughts? The floor layout is pretty limited due to the fireplace.

if you go to ( http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/9011542/thumbs/rob_stoner-s-ideas), I have some fireplace and sconce Ideas.

Thanks!
