You need a plasterer with drywall to smooth coat it. Also may want to consider updating the lighting.

You don't need ceiling light for a living/family - just use a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. When you repaint the ceiling, use a paint with a slight sheen to it. That way you'l get a reflection off the window and lights.

I probably would have used white on the top of the wainscoting and painted the wainscoting and trim and lighter but contrasting color. As it is, you're creating more separation between the ceiling and the walls. For ceiling lights probably recessed can lights would be best or something flush mounted.

@leemiller the wall color is the color we bought the house with, it will be changed for a lighter shade i personally love white, thanks for your idea.

I'd remove the wainscot, it cuts the room in half (obviously), and will make the ceiling look lower. A full wal, painted light, would work. And I take it this was not a load bearing wall that was removed?

This is something you might be interested in. There is a company in Illinois called Tiny Timbers look them up on the web. This tongue and groove you see here is from that company. It's as thin as the engineered flooring you see in the flooring stores, only it comes raw. They have just about any , and I mean any wood you can think of from walnut to Brazilian Rosewood, and in any plank size . In the photo we used pine because we were going to paint it . I can only imagine what the Rosewood would look like with just a few coats of clear.
The ceiling shown in the photos are of the kitchen , the bedroom was also done. Our company did this remodel , I did the design and it turned out beautiful.
