    Hi , yes it can be used around a fire place , gas fire places give out Radient heat , which means the heat goes out the front and not into the walls

    Look at my Oyster Emperador mother of pearl or Autum Leaves , depending on your taste , -- reg heat resistant ! Hot air rises so the area above the fire place will get very hot if kept on for a long period of time , natural shell gives a rustic effect but other options are ledger stone
