Horizontal for sure. The vertical looks unbalanced up against the door.

It's difficult to say without seeing more of the space, but you could probably switch to a long, narrow rug. You wouldn't be able to use it as a door mat though, since it would need to be centered in the foyer.

Your current rug is fine as is, just spin it horizontal.
