To remove a wall or not to remove a wall?

We are getting ready to remodel our kitchen and we are thinking about opening up this upper wall and moving the cooktop to this side of the kitchen. There are stairs to the basement on the other side of the wall in the living room. it will be a big expense but I'll be able to enjoy the fireplace while I cook and open up the space for better socializing. Do you think it's worth the extra expense?

9 years agoI'm not sure that, with the stairwell right there, the spaces are ever going to really feel connected. Plus, you won't be able to get good ventilation with a hood that far from the exterior wall, so you'll fill the house with cooking smells. And lose half the storage in your kitchen.
Maybe just do shorter wall cabinets on that side, pushed up, so that you have a look-through? That worked pretty well in my kitchen, where we couldn't spare the storage...
(Cabinets in this zone 24" above counter, and 18" elsewhere.)
