I've just been thinking about the same thing. I was wondering if a length of pvc pipe with a cap at either end would be safe for the fabric, particularly fine woolens.

Will this do? 52.75" long -- not made to stand vertically, however.

Maybe the long plastic tubes sold to store rolls of xmas wrap? I don't know the size.
