Blushing Giant Care

It's been about half a year since I've started collecting tillies, and for the most part all things are looking great. Quite a few of my plants are blooming, and some of my favorites are pupping. Most recently my Rodrigueziana x Bulbosa hybrid has formed four pups, and my Rex is forming a second pup. :) But what vexes me since day one is my inability to find a source on how to properly care for Blushing Giants.

I treat all my plants the same, for the most part, without problems. Even though it's winter I still dunk my plants (and make absolutely certain they dry within two to three hours afterwards.) My tillies growth has been pretty consistent, with quite a few growing noticeably thicker bodies, longer leaves, and more pups. Of all my tillies Blushing Giants are my favorites, but they are also something of a pain for me to take care of. They seem to require much more care than the rest of my lovelies for whatever reason, and even then I'm not certain my current regimen is correct. Can anyone who owns Blushing Giants tell me how they care for these particular plants? My Giants are growing, but I can never keep them to my standard of "pristine condition" like I've managed for all my other tillies.

Main issue: what looks like drying/bruising on the outer ring of leaves (doesn't extend to innermost and center ring of leaves, and only visible when plant is wet.) Only one of my Blushing Giants has this problem; the other doesn't share this malady. What am I doing wrong?

I feel for you as no one has popped up with any advice! I didn't know what a "Blushing Giant" is so searched and found it at:

    http://www.rainforestflora.com/store/tillandsia/A31410/Blushing-Giant/

    It is a hybrid, T. streptophylla X T. seleriana.

I don't think I have any streptophylla (though a few of my plants rather look like pictures of them), but I do have a seleriana. I used to have 2, but the older/smaller one up and died overnight, so into the compost pile it went.

The newer/larger seleriana I have I am hanging so that the leaves point at an angle downward so water is less likely to accumulate in the bulb area. I just checked it out and see the paper dust on it, so it's one I mail ordered from RFI (that packaged my last order in a clumsy/thoughtless manner). One of the outer leaves has a curly/dried/brown tip (no surprise really, it's an older leaf), and a few other leaves have a bit of the same dryness, but not bad looking. On the other hand, there is some bright-light green root growth so the plant must be happy and/or hopeful (to find something to grab onto). I just now dunked it in some water I previously had other T.s soaking in, and it is hung up to dry in a bright south-facing window (outdoor humidity is currently 32%, Temp 58F, and a cold front moves in tomorrow night so things could be worse for it!). I may have to soak-water it a bit more than I have been. Nearly everything else seems not to mind my relaxed watering schedule (mostly spritzing), but I will take a little more care of this plant.

As you indicate that your other plants are doing okay and only the one is or may be or just looks unhappy, I suspect you are doing everything right. Talk to it. If it ignores you, remind it that you have a compost pile (or will make one) and that it can be unhappy there if it prefers.... Years ago I read about a fellow who held an unhappy African Violet out a multi-story high window and told it to straighten up or else! The plant got better real fast!

Thanks for the reply. :) I guess I shouldn't be too surprised by the lack of response; Blushing Giants are super slow growers. Even my purported slow growing Xerographica seedling has shown more progress. Yeah, I have a compost pile, bet just about everyone here on this site has one (likely with one or two tillies ending up in there as well...:P ) Future soil for the blue java banana I got for my brother, so there's always that. Thanks again, debby!

P.S. Is there private messaging on this site? If there is, I have somehow failed to find the option. Help?

If you click on a person's name it will take you to their home page. If they have allowed private messages you will see the word "Message" in the top right. Click on it to message them. Also, if you want to allow others to message you, from your home page click on the edit profile in the top right and then on the left side click on Advanced Settings. Down near the bottom you can choose, "Who Can Message Me". The top of the page lets you select when you want to get emails. It would be good to say, "Always" for when someone messages you.
