Cleft slate really depends on the amount of cleft it makes it more uncomfortable to walk on if too much , IMO best kept outside . I think slate is a beautiful material but can be very unforgiving on knees and backs and dishes. I think I would look at marmoleum too. I actually have a MCM home and I am older and we have big dogs so no wood and did not want a stone floor but we chose a laminate that looks like slate it actually even has a slight cleft We love it for ease of cleaning and how it looks

I have cleft slate in my den and honed slate in a bathroom. Love both.

I just vacuum it.

Slate is really difficult to lay and have it look good from any but an expert tiler. Good slate is not the cheap $2 a square foot 35% cull rate box store stuff either. It is an expensive job for a reason.

But, done right, it is durable and beautiful. My entry foyer is 50 years old, set in an old fashioned mud bed, and is gorgeous. The nicks, gouges, and stains tell the story of real life coming through those doors, and all blend into a great patina. You have to want the patina as well.

If you want pristine floors that resist life, then a porcelain look alike with an epoxy grout would be more suitable. And probably cheaper in the long term.

I grew up with terrazzo floors. Authentic MCM. Bullet-proof.

Terrazzo would be a great choice. Fritztile has terrazzo tiles. Since no one except some out of South Florida know anything about creating authentic terrazzo anymore.

I have had cleft slate in my front entryway for just over 4 years with no issues. I vacuum it and once a year I get on my hands and knees and seal it. I still love the look.

I think I must be the only person who thinks Terrazzo is about as ugly as it gets.

I've got slate in my front and rear entry ways. I love it - it never looks dirty, cleans up in a breeze and has no stains that I've noticed. I think I may have sealed it right after I put it down (nearly 20 years ago), but since then I've only ever had to run a wet mop over it. I've never had a pet pee on it, but I've had cat puke on it - didn't make a mark at all. It is naturally split 12 x 12 tile. It's a pretty high oxide, colorful green/orange variety.
