No buds on adenium... help !!!

Hi all...

This is my adenium and it seems to be growing well... but my problem is that when I had 1st purchased this plant it had 2 - 3 buds on it but after getting it at my place the buds dropped. Now it's been almost 2 months but there doesn't seem to be any budding. I've dropped a tbsp of dap but even that didn't help. What should I do so that it'll start budding and flowering again? It has beautiful red flowers and I can't wait to see them back..

Day temperatures are approx 32 C and nights around 24 C. I water it 2 - 3 times a week when the top 1 inch of the soil seems dry. It's kept next to my Gardenia so it gets a bit of misting as well when I do that to my Gardenia. The adenium leaves dry out in a matter of 30 mins after misting.

I would also like to prune it to give it a better shape. Any idea in that regard will be most welcomed as well...

What is dap please?

Does that pot have at least one drainage hole? At least one hole is a must.

What is it planted in? The soil mix I mean, as it looks very odd and nothing like what we advise for good Adenium growth. Looks like some kind of garden soil/sand mix, if so, drainage won't be good. Please tell us exactly what it is. Adeniums need fast draining grit rich mixes as they can rot easily, your mix appears to be the opposite. Was it supplied in that mix? Some ppl grow them with no organic components at all in order to get perfect drainage and no rotting.

How much water do you give it at each watering, and has it been fed?

Always good to put your location after your name as you will see most of us do as this helps when cultural advise is asked for.

Looks like it's in a window setting....does it get any sun, does it go outside? Please give as much info as you can.

Most Adeniums have bloom cycles, maybe two a year, they don't necessarily flower all year round. A change of cultural practise and conditions may have induced the bud drop. It may well have to settle in to the way it's now looked after in order for it to flower again.

I and others on here would probably advise that any pruning should be done when the plant is in good growth mode, which for the most of us is in spring, and summer too to some extent. The exception being when it's done to cut out rot or damage that would otherwise threaten the plant.

Hi Gill,

Thanks for being so patient with me. I am new with plants and m loving it.

Well I m from Mumbai, India. The plant is kept outside the room window and it receives direct sun from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 2:00 p.m. till sunset. I don't move the plant at all.

I used to water it wit liquid fertilisers 19-19-19 when i purchased it as it was a bit lanky. I used 1 tbsp of water soluble NPK in 1 litre of water. I watered the plant with it 2ce a week for a month and then staryed regular watering after the new leaves started. Then last week gave it DAP. DAP is Di Ammonium Phosphate. I got it from the nursery where they said that I could use 1 tbsp over the soil and the plants would bud.

The plant has been watered recently when the pic was taken. The pot is Ceramic and has about an inch diameter hole at its bottom. The soil is a mixture of soil and sand I suppose as this is what I got it in. I generally water it 2 to 3 times a week when the top 1 inch of the soil dries up. I water approx. 300 to 400 ml. And it just starts to drip out from the hole a bit. I have 1 more adenium which is potted in a mixture of 90 % coco peat and 10 % garden soil. Is that mix fine for adenium? It has 2 drainage holes. I have noted that the coco peat takes almost a week to dry up while the 1 we r talking about in this post just takes 2 days to dry n inch of potted soil.

Hello again and thanks for the reply which gives us a lot more info on your plant.

Despite having grown Adeniums from seed here on the UK for several years, and being given two plants, I'm afraid I don't consider myself qualified to help out in this instance. However, now that you've been able to give some more info, one of the others here will hopefully see you post and comment further.

My conditions are so greatly different to yours and I have had several issues myself in growing my plants, so I think one of the more expert Adenium growers needs to come in.

That said, we are quiet here at the moment as Christmas and New Year are almost upon us, the forum is very slow, so don't be discouraged if replies don't come flying in at this time if the year. Just bump the thread back to the top if it drops down too far and hopefully it will then be seen and answered.

Producing buds requires energy. In my experience giving the plant as mu ch direct sunlight as possible along with proper fertilizing (which you are doing )will give you regular blooms.

For your soil, there are several great recipes on here for creating a good mix. Avoid peats as they retain moisture. Mix up some small gritty gravel, sand, soil and or pearlite and youll have a good mix for your adenium. Goodluck!
