I bought a 5-gal of Valspar Flat White Ceiling paint. I didn't give different shades a consideration - I don't know that you need to.

White Dove in flat finish for the ceilings. Easy, breezy.

I have cotton balls as my trim and cloud white for my ceiling.

I have always used the plain white ceiling paint. If you ask at the hardware store, all brands should have a ceiling white.

That's good to know. I have the Benjamin Moore white on my ceilings...I don't pay attention to it, it just looks white. I'll definitely keep that in mind for next time though.

Kathy, if you use BM, (or any, for that matter), just get the plain old white base and don't have it tinted. That's what I do. any white color you pick will have a tint they add to the white. Even their 'bright white' is still not as white as the base.

For a brighter white than White Dove for ceiling, Oxford White or Steam (AF-15). I went through the same thing and found White Dove too dark for the ceiling. It looked very dark and grey when I tried it it in my living room ceiling. Decorator's White looked very white, but also very blue. Oxford White is very crisp and I would have chosen it, but I wanted a softer white, so I went with a shade darker -Steam for ceiling and trim. I original picked a gallon of the highly recommended White Dove thinking I was going to use it for all my trim and ceiling, but after painting my bath ceiling in that color, I stopped using it.

If Oxford White is not white enough, try Chantilly Lace or Vista Ceiling paint if it's in your area.

Most plain untinted ceiling paint is going to have a natural tint, either grey or blue. I think it depends on the brand though.

StephE,,,,it really doesn't. I get plain untinted base from BM. It is pure white. BM "bright white" actually looks like a dull gray undertone when compared against it. It's a pure white base. Any color you pick off the card is going to have a tint added to it.

Fair enough. I guess just the plain ceiling paints I've tried look grey or blue.

Of course they do…the expression that the ceiling is your fifth wall is right on. “Ceiling" paint is yucky. Just pick your woodwork trim color , in flat finish and use that..
