Congratulations on the great condo! The cabinet pulls, warehouse style lighting and sleek windows suggest a more contemporary look. A photo of your "traditional" furnishings would help. You might want to pursue a more eclectic style to marry multiple styles.

Are you buying it or bought it? Why try to fit a square peg in a round hole? How about you look for something with a more traditional look to begin with, maybe in a historic revamp building, etc...

One option is to paint the walls a slight gray tone to warm up the space a bit.

Looks like you have such an amazing view, so I definitely think you made the right decision by installing solar shades! Some drapery side panels might be a good way to add some color into the room with out taking away your view!

I think that your new condo is wonderful. I love the look of "Transitional" and have done it many times for clients.
I think that based on your information and the picture of the new place is to paint every wall the same color. It will keep it open feeling but warm it up to pull in the wood tones of your furniture. I suggest looking at the taupe family of wall colors, works great with many things. If taupe is to gray, then do a warm neutral. Taupe and black with cream of white, makes a wonderful transitional home.
One thing I have done is taken a traditional piece of upholstered furniture and have it reupholstered with a contemporary fabric being a tone on tone. Actually have this in my own home. I always love to mix something so off the wall with the traditional items. Every room needs one unexpected piece in it being- art, accessories or an accent piece of furniture.

Well, it's really an easy fix, some crown molding to define the space and make it more traditional and bolder, richer wall colors to compliment your furniture! You could even do curtains with sheers on a chunky Rod, nice traditional Rugs and kitchen and bath can both use richer wall colors as well. And a tad darker ceiling.

Have fun, crown molding, curtains, rugs and lighting will solve it.

I think you can combine your traditional furniture with the more modern surroundings. First, doesn't your condo already have blinds? You might need curtains mainly if the sun shines in during the afternoon. I would move in and wait to see if curtains are even necessary--they would be a last consideration. I saw someone mention crown molding. I don't think you could successfully add crown molding with the floor to ceiling windows but wait on that, too. What I would go ahead with is a large traditional rug along with the sofa and chairs. If you have a Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams store nearby they have great slipcovered sofas and chairs that are very traditional but they're in more upbeat fabrics that are easy to blend with other elements. They're probably less expensive than RH but still quality furniture. Your new place is great. Also, your colors don't have to be dark to be traditional. I would keep upholstery and bedspreads light in color to continue the open airy feel. Add live plants and a wonderful painting.

Leelee- I am 27/M so color does make a difference haha! Your suggestions are great- I don't think I will do crown molding- I was thinking of painting the baseboard along the bottom of the walls white and then changing the actuall wall to a lighter color. Do you think that might help? I am keeping my eye out for a nice oriental or something traditional along those lines of your picture. I live in Hoboken across from NYC- and one of the reasons I'm buying is for the views of manhattan - I'm not sure how much light I will get yet but I think waiting is a good idea.

OK no pink for you! My thought is that you're looking at your apartment thinking "it needs something" but you don't know exactly what yet. I know its easier to paint before you move in but I would select a sofa first. That will set the tone for the room colorwise. Then paint and move in. Looks like your baseboards are already white? If not that's a good plan but I wouldn't lock into a wall paint color before you choose your sofa or a rug. Check out some web sites for oriental rugs. I've actually bought several on line and have been happy. Go to stores and see what you like...do you want a flat weave or one with pile? I prefer flat weave because I usually like their designs better and to me they look more current. It's easier to match your sofa or a rug with paint than the other way. Oushak and Uzbek are both good styles, not like your granny would have. If you do want to paint ahead of the move go with a light gray like in the earlier picture. I think you could work with that fairly easily. MG + BW will give you cloth samples of upholstery fabric so you can match with paint/rugs. Also, think about art....

I agree with the grey or blue walls idea. You have dark furniture so I think it a light grey/blue color will make the surroundings look bright despite the dark furniture. Traditional drapes over the windows will also help transform the modern window into a more traditional one.
