I wouldn't put anything that would get in the way of walking through here. The best thing might be just to concentrate on getting some wall art. Take a look at a local gallery or art.com.

I knew a homeless guy who actually lived under a bridge here in Florida. I visited him occasionally and in an odd way was a bit envious.

I agree with above comments. A shallow sofa table behind couch (possibly move couch forward a few inches?) and pretty artwork or a collage of family photos on walkeay wall.

No one is going to sit there, so a bench is not a good addition to that space; it's also right in the way of the doorway, the way you have it in the photos. I do like the table/lamp behind the sofa idea that someone else mentioned. A photo gallery of family/friends/holiday pictures could be interesting, hung artfully and in an ecclectic collection of frames and sizes (there are great places on the web showing how to do this). A mirror can be added to the photo collection, too, something that fits with the arrangement.

Why is a table with a lamp more obstructive than that odd bench that will go unused. At least a table will have a function. If the table is narrow, I vote with your husband. But better yet, move the white console behind the couch, put a lamp there and art on the wall, as recommended above. A compromise to try.

Think about taking photos you like and having them printed in black/white. That would look great with barious sized frames. I think walmart does it inexpensively, not sure

I'd seriously trip over anything sticking out more than a couple inches in that space. I mean, it's a very nice space for sure but SOMEONE will hurt themselves trying to stumble around tables or worse, a bench, which would sit below my line of vision.

This example of a family photo gallery wall is my favorite. My favorite is go big or go home so make a statement or don't do it.

Visual clutter drives me crazy.

I would do one oversized piece of art rather than multiple pieces. Go for drama, not clutter. And definitely keep the route open with no obstructions.
