Mozaique

When I got this bulb it had a suspicious hole deep into the basal plate (see pic below). I cleaned it out until I was sure nothing was in it, but put it in a separate room just in case. I don'the think the mother bulb will flower but it has put out four offsets. Do you think it is safe to put with other bulbs? Second pic was taken today.

Actually, I had posted this picture before and several more. If you put NBF in the search box all the pictures should come up. It was the spring that I had 13 of the leave my bulbs that were stored in our furnace room and it was quite warm so they thought it was spring and they were flying all over the place!!

Thanks Beatrice, I'm feeling much better believing if there was an NBF it left the bulb before the bulb got to me :)

And thanks again Donna, for educating me about them. -J

Donna ! I don't remember this picture ! I never saw one emerging. Your picture is stuning . But , this occurs later in season , doesn't it ? in January the insect isn't mature ?

    Béarice and All

This picture of the emerging fly was taken on Feb 7 2014. I had about 100+ bulbs that I kept downstairs in our furnace room which had been outside for the summer. This is all we have for a cellar. About 15 square ft where the furnace, washer and dryer and cat box reside. It never gets really cold, maintaining the heat from the furnace about 60° all winter.

The maggots got fooled into thinking it was spring so they hatched early. Flying all over the place, it was like a horror movie!! One never actually knows if there is a maggot in a bulb if it is planted as they go in under the soil at the basal plate. Some years I unknowingly bring in just a few maggots but that year I brought in a whole family with relatives!

So far this year I haven't seen any but that doesn't mean there aren't any!! Another month or so will tell.

It was that year that something caught my eye that was moving and I watched in amazement as the fly emerged!! I yelled for John to get the camera and got several good shots. It happens fast and a few minutes later when the wings dried, they are able to fly!!

Here is another one with still wet wings but the dirt had been cleaned off or dried off.

Don't forget to click on the picture to see it in large size!

Donna, I Don't want to "like" that but the picture is great! Thank you for showing!

Thank you Donna, I do not know how I did not see images in 2014, but they are fascinating! I never saw the alive insect at home !!

And finally, Jody, looking for the photos of the bulbs as I received, I realized that mine too had a suspicious hole !!

just blomming now , weather is awfull , difficult to take a correct picture :

Beatrice, your flower is beautiful! I'll have to be happy looking at yours because my bulb is putting energy into making offsets:) But one year I should have a basket of flowers lol

I wonder if the NBF was a problem with this bulb. At least it looks like they were treated so our other bulbs should be safe. After seeing Donna's pictures, I am always suspicious of holes around the basal plate. - J

Hmmm so this is Mosiaque. Somehow I thought it would be better but I like it but it totally reminds me of my puniceum x papilio bulb # 2 from Ray, take a look...

My Mosaique is just starting to open and it looks like it's darker..

    now I can't wait!!!

    How beautiful...I can't wait either!!!!

you're right Donna , mine wasn't so red. I'll take more pictures this afternoon .

how many flowers on your puniceum x papilio bulb # 2 ?

Béa, Bulb # 1 had 4 flowers and bulb # 2 had 2 flowers but I'm not totally convinced that they are the exact same bulb just yet as they came to me a year apart and may have come from a different clump. They might be seeds from the same cross. I'm sure that they both will produce 4 flowers in the future but # 1 is still recovering from nearly being cut in half!!☺☺

I'm have some serious doubts that my Mosaique is really Mosaique!! There is so much color, and the back of the buds are all dotted just like Flamenco Queen!! The stalk is extremely thick too, thicker than yours from what I can tell from your picture. I'll know in a couple of days. ☺☺

Ohhh now you have a group of us waiting. Praying its Mozaique or something even more beautiful!

l just tried to poke at it but was afraid to damage it as it appears that it wants to balloon!! I didn't want to tear it just for another questionable picture. I then checked Royal Color's pictures and Bea's above and can't detect any ballooning. The color is a really dark rusty red so whatever it is I think it will be a bit different from the others! It's taking its time to open, kind of like watching molasses go up hill.....

My Moccas are out and I'll wait for a few more flowers to open before I post pictures. It's lovely, looks just like the one I got several years ago. Fledermaus is lagging behind a bit but I do think it will be out when Mocca is out for a first hand comparison!!

No , no ballooning for mine ! I am curious knowing what you will get.

    today :

    Béa,

Yours in now more colorful!! Still close to my hybrid above but more red than mine which is a rusty red.

Maybe I am just dreaming up all these differences in my mind with my Mozaique because I want it to be something super-duper special?!?

The stem on mine is super thick and it is purple shaded on the lower 3rd of the scape with a purplish ring around the neck. Also the ovaries and pecidels are very dark green and extremely glossy! (Or is it just my imagination??)

    click to make them bigger.....☺☺

Béatrice, your pictures are much better than the ones Royal Colors had. I didn't order Mozaique but now I wish I had! :-)

Donna, this is exiting although I also think you have Mozaique. Can't wait to see your pictures!

Amazing pictures of the NBF!! Did the flies lay a bunch of new eggs or were you able to control them? How do you control NBF?

I have not seen this type of damage. Do others in Florida have problems with NBF?

    last modified: 9 years ago

    Sweet Dreams,

No, once they hatched they flew around at the windows trying to get out!! They all ended up dead by one means or another.... ☻☻

Here are some pictures of the ballooning, I thought I'd post them before I went to bed just in case it opens up during the night!!

I believe you guys when you say it shouldn't be Flamenco Queen, as I would be so disappointed.......

    last modified: 9 years ago

Well, here she is and I'm not impressed. The best part of this bulb is the ballooning buds! So, I'm sure you all have an opinion on what this might be, or is it just an overly pigmented Mosaique with nice buds!!

I could take a million pictures of this and not one would come out good, just one of those flowers.... maybe it will get better with more flowers open and they mature.

Actually, this is not the variety expected, I do not know what it is !

    last modified: 9 years ago

It is getting a better shape as it is out longer but so hard to take a picture, it blows out and the fine details get lost and it just looks like a big blob!

Does anyone think it would be an over colored Show Master? I went through my pictures and others on the internet to see if Show Master ballooned before it opened but couldn't find any.

Hm? What size do the flowers have? Mozaique seems to be rather small. It reminds me a bit of on of the Sonatini specials you had last year. Was it #105? But the color was darker I think. Send the picture to RC and ask them. I would wait untill more flowers are open to see if they're all strange shaped.

At least it's interesting. And I like the red!

Here are a couple more pictures that look a little better. It actually has improved drastically but still not able to catch a good shot of it. The back of the flowers are gorgeous.

This last one is the best for true color.

There are two more buds on this thing so it will be interesting to see if the flowers in the next two scapes are exactly the same or if the color is modified some.

I'll try not to post too many more flowers, will try to wait until all 4 flowers are out!!

I'd love to see what the rest of you got besides Beatrice!!!! Maybe there is a mate to this one out there somewhere!!!!

    Smiling balloon...

This is almost impossible to photograph! Doesn't anyone have any guesses??

I will say, it's nicer in person, it certainly grabs your attention when you walk into the room!!

I had a link for a European hippeastrum website a few years ago but can't seem to locate it now. I checked on Flora Image and there is nothing that resembles this. After the other 2 stalks bloom, I send some pictures to Paul and see if he has any guesses. Someone else must have received one of these too, right???

Is this the second flower open? Did you buy only one Mozaique?

Yes, this is the second flower open and it is shaped slightly different from the first. This morning I told my husband to gently touch the tip of the 3rd ballooning flower and it opened like a jack-in-the -box, he was amused for about 5 seconds!!! Third flower is shaped slightly different than the other two. This huge bulb has two more buds well on their way. It will be interesting to see if all the flowers are the same.

I only bought the one bulb....so some of you guys out there with two have a better chance of ending up with this apparition!! It is virtually impossible to take a good picture. Even with out the flash the color is so intense it blows out and the strange shape of the flowers make it almost impossible to see the huge deep green star in the center!!!

I'm waiting for some help with an ID!!!! ☺☺☺☺

second scape from mozaique , with fresher temperatures , took time to open slowly : better than the first one

    Beatrice,

Very pretty and the colors look so vibrant :-))))

    Fred

This is exactly what I would have hoped it would/should look like!! I love it!!

My "apparition" is sending up 2 more stalks that will bloom soon, who knows what these will look like!

Oooh Donna I hope yours looks as beautiful as Beatrice's :-)))

Béatrice, this is very beautiful! You must have a very good time right now with all that gorgeous flowers open!

Donna, good luck with the new flowers and don't forget to show them to us...

    Anja

When we see all these beautiful flowers, we no longer hope for spring :-)

I still do :-) And there will be more flowers because of all the rebloomers in spring...

Here is my second scape of my "not Mozaique" ; the same as the first scape but I was able to get some better pictures of the color by shining my husband's high power LED flashlight directly on the flowers and the flash off on the camera.

The ballooning bud was huge as were the others.

I guess this is as good as it gets. Eventually, I'll send pictures to Royal Colors to ask what they think it is. The flowers hang down and remind me of little parasols!

    Any guesses out there???

Wow, Donna that is really different. You certainly get your share of unusual flowers :)

Jody, I'm wondering if this was slated to end up in the trash pile and got mixed in my by mistake or if it's an actual variety that they were testing ( like my original Tinkerbell). My guess is that they had a few of them and were testing for performance. Well, this does perform well, the bulb is still pretty hard and firm considering it has sent up 3 huge scapes ,has rooted and has 6 thin strap like leaves that were out during the blooming which is always nice. Since the flower is nicer than it photographs, I'd say we might see her again some time...

The only thing I could find that was even remotely close was h. Hawaii and it really isn't close at all but I could only find one small pictures on one of those European websites and those pictures most often leave much to be desired...☺☺☺

You are so lucky with your noid's!! This us just so different. Maybe you can call it parasol as you described it :)

I promise, these will be the last pictures(☻☻) but I finally got a couple of perfect shots!!

and a close-up of her green eye.

The red deep in the eye is so dark, it photographs nearly black...

I think I might call her Scarlet Parasols if she doesn't have a name of her own. Is she too orange to be called Scarlet ??

I am very pleased to have received a reply from Royal Colors about a possible ID for this bulb.

Sorry for the poor quality, the file was so small that when I tried a screen shot you couldn't read the text so I just took a snapshot. I will self a few of these last flowers to share with anyone who wants to try just to see what they might get!!

So, I guess I truly do have a special bulb!! The flowers are much prettier on the last two scapes and I am very happy with her, she is very unique!! The flowers are long lasting and I've never seen such a large beautiful ballooning bud!

Hopefully she will offset and I may be able to share a few of these in the future☺☺

Unfortunately, the camera doesn't see what the eye sees with this flower what the eye sees is much better.

I have plenty of pollen too....☺☺

Congratulations, Donna! So you have a mutant of Mosaique? It will be interesting to self it. Maybe someone who has the real Mosaique could do the same and then you could compare the results in a few years! The last pictures are really lovely!

Donna, this is the kind of noid we all dream of getting. So unique - congratulations!!!

Well, I just selfed her first flower so it will be interesting to see if she will set seeds. If so, there will be plenty to go around!!☺☺

The sentence above "we have also once seen with two different types" to me means that there were two others that came out different, or did it mean that two other varieties came out with a "mutant" either way, I would so love to see them!!!

I would say that means that it also happened with two ather varieties. That's really interesting but nothing I could try at home...

    Hi,

Well ladies and gentlemen, here is the very last picture of the last flowers on the last scape of my Mozaique variant. The flowers consistently got better with each scape but this is the last. I got a lot of bloom time from this bulb! I have different pollinations on the last 8 flowers so something might take.

I am so happy I ended up with this!!

And thanks to those of you out there who helped to search for her ID even if it was in vain!!☺☺
