I like platforms too but we need full sized bookshelf and a desk as well so we need more floor space(hopefully).

What do the boys say? Explain your ideas and why you have them. Then ask how they feel about the various options. Ask if they have ideas you didn't mention. It's their room. Let it be their project to design.

why not keep one bed and get one bunk that has a desk under it?

I appreciate all the suggestions! I hadn't though about just getting a single loft bed and keeping one bed.

I have attached a few beds we have been looking at. Do you think the black would make the room too dark? Does it do with the paint? Does metal look cheap? If we go with black, do we have to do black dressers or a different color/material?

The leaning bookshelves/desk is something that I thought may look good on the wall to the right where the big football poster is now but it is in mocha so I don't think it goes with the black beds, right? Aack! I've been working on this for months and am so frustrated!

Bunk beds will be a very temporary measure, the 10 year old will outgrow it within 3-4 years. I would consider putting shelves on wall between the windows and clearing the floor. In other words, use the vertical space in the room and closet for storage and organization. Leaning bookcases are not the best visually or practically.

Is it possible to place the beds you have in an "L" shape? You could then add small desk at end of bed, bookshelves, chest, etc. This would give you 2 other walls to place furniture on and flooring for play space.

the one reason to go metal, the room will look bigger. and two boys are not going to give a hoot if it "looks cheap" they will think metal is cool! also .........honestly dont worry about that do what works, the metal frame is more open .

And if the boy have to stay in this room as one gets a little older it would be kinda private for one of them to be "up"

Seems like a lot of cost for only 2-4 years of viable use. These boys are just getting to their peak growth periods. Find another place for books. Purge clothing and organize the heck out of the space. A room this small needs a min of stuff and activity. They will need long twin size beds before you know it. Look at vacation homes where they stack people in small spaces as much as possible. That might give you some more creative ideas.
