Hi Charlene, Generally a hardwood floor that has been carpeted over is fairly easy to refinish. If adhesives have not been used to put the rug down there are usually tack strips set around the perimeter of the room under the rug. This is a think strip of wood that is nailed to the floor around the perimeter of the room and it has small nails in it that hold the carpet in place. Usually it is a simple matter of removing the rug and then removing the tack strips. Once this is done nail holes can be filled in the original flooring. Sanding and then re-applying a finish would then follow.

If you have the floor refinished professionally expect to spend between $3.50 and $4.50 per square foot to refinish the hardwood flooring.

    Hope that helps.

    Good Luck
