I think you'll have to move the pool table out of the center of the room before you'll find a satisfactory furniture arrangement. The way it's located now makes it look like the furniture is for spectators at a pool tournament. You have no access to the fireplace, no cozy conversation area; I just don't think it works.

I would suggest you sketch out a floor plan, try the pool table in different locations, perhaps in the bay or on the other side by the stairs, and then see how furniture might be arranged. First thing I would do is free up the area in front of the fireplace for seating.

thanks so much for your suggestion!...Unfortunately, this is the only place the pool table works because of the access you need to all sides of it. Any other ideas if the pool table needs to stay in this location?..You're right about "spectators at a (family) pool tournament"...this is exactly what will happen:) I'm hoping there is space on the other side of the table for some seating...just don't know how. Should it be a sofa across the whole middle window? I'll attach a closer pic of the area close to the windows...and look forward to your comments!...thanks too much:)

If you won't use it everyday for pool could you put something on top to make it into a dining table? The seating would be for eating or watching. Btw, my husband has fond memories of growing up with a pool table in the living room! : )

Is it possible to have the unit slid to the right, into that nook, opposite the fireplace? Or is that a dining room?
Groveraxle is right. At the moment the pool table looks like the beast n the middle, even your chairs are scared even touching the rug that thing stands on... ;-). Do you play pool all the time?
I would try to slide it to the right, and then make a more cozy arrangement closer to the fireplace. Here a few photos for living rooms without pool tables...
I think your idea for a large couch in the back by the windows is great. How about some gentle window treatments?

Two other small observations:
If your pool table cover is a less dominant colour it might mingle a little better with the living room environment.
The arrangement on the right of your entry door could benefit from being centered on that wall. I would put your beautiful tall sculpture perhaps a little more prominent place, maybe even in the middle of your magnificent tall windows, behind the new couch! Beautiful home you got,by the way!

What a fabulous looking house and room ! I understand about the pool table needing to be accessible all round, but was wondering whether you might be able to pull it just a little further back away from the window area .. so that it's not dead center .. that would free you up rather more space for a more intimate seating arrangement and take the edge off the 'spectator seating' thing you have happening at the moment. I think I'm in love with the designer whose work you've used to illustrate what you want ! And I think the grand scale of your room lends itself perfectly to that look ! .. It's quirky and eclectic enough that the pool table will add rather than detract from the look. If your husband is all for it, I'd go ahead and start collecting the pieces you'll need, painting the room and hanging the drapes etc. .... Beware of being talked out of the fabulous design style you're wanting to mimic. Even with the space you now have, with smaller scale seating .. in place of the cream sofa and chairs .. you'd still be able to make it work, I think ... particularly because your chosen designer's impact doesn't depend on anything 'matching' .. and it's very 'personal' ! If you have, by nature, that same eye for building an eclectic mix of furnishings, I'd go for it ! ... If not,but you have the confidence ,,, imitate ! :-)

darcy and mark...we were hoping to use the pool table(with its ping pong table conversion kit) when we have guests over...so we want it available for dinners:)...Hoping to create a fun environment for the kids...glad your husband liked it!

LOVE the first pic you posted...that's what I want for my draperies (in turquoise!), THanks for the compliment:)...I haven't even dealt with that area to the right of the door (that's coming next!..btw...the sculpture is actually a light that we don't even need:).
