Conifer cuttings are best taken from a young, vibrant plant rather than a very mature one. And pines are not the easiest of conifers to strike cuttings from. It is also important to know the species of pine as some are best attempted from softwood cuttings (late spring/early summer) while others are better from hardwood cuttings (late fall into winter).

Your chances of successful propagation are greatly enhanced if you start from seed rather than from cuttings, especially if you are not well experienced in this process.

Could Aeroponic cloner work? How would I save seeds?

I have no idea re: the first question and check this out in answer to the second - propagating pine from seed.

Thank you.

Is there some special quality about this 40ft pine that you are looking to preserve? Rooting pines is very difficult, easier to graft if their is some unique characteristic you are trying to preserve.

If there is nothing unique about the tree, grow from seed. MUCH easier. Usually you collect in fall, but you might find some cones now that haven't lost all their seed. Your next step depends on which species of pine we are talking about. White Pine would be 24hrs in warm water, followed by 60 days of cold stratification. Usually done by placing the seeds in the fridge with damp perlite or paper town, then planting in 50/50 peat/perlite. Keep moist, provide light, and ideally a heat mat at about 70 degrees.
