Help needed from creative souls for uninspiring condo deck

I need serious help with my condo deck. While it is a utilitarian space, 7'x20' and has an uninspiring view, I love sitting outside to read the paper and I love pretty plants. With some help, I know I can make it a colorful, cozy space I enjoy. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. (P.s. I love red and I'm on a serious budget so whatever I do I have to be able to do it myself and do it cheaply)

You can find a nice small seating set at almost any big box store. Costco, Sam's, Home Depot, Lowes,Target and Menards are all good resources

My suggestion would be to have plant container that hang on the railing, then plant the seeds. This would save you space. Another option have the umbrella that has an arch base, again save you space. Looks like a quiet corner.

Here is a pic of a small but cozy looking deck. I like the plants at eye level from the chair with a sisal rug and candle. You could also string white (christmas) lights if you have a source of electricity.

Paint the floor, Every other board, One Hunter green the next Navy blue. You can do this yourself. It will make your porch much more Finished, larger and cooler.

Paint all the pots red or replace them with red pots. Then overplant each pot as if you were in charge of planting Disneyland's pots.

I'm also going to suggest you remove all of the small green thumb bits, that don't fit on the wire shelf unit. If you have plants to go in the extras, they should be on the walls That leaves you with just seating to arrange as you like, and the umbrella to place (behind a tall plant?) in the space. If there is money left, an indoor-outdoor rug gives another layer of non-maintenance color.

Agreed with the suggestions above to hang plant containers on the railing. And how about an outdoor rug or runner(s)
You could put something like this (check out the links), with little pots and plants on the shelves as a screen? Or without the shelves as a small bench.
And try to keep your planters in max. 2 colours. It will look prettier when they are not filled with plants too.

    Love, love, love these suggestions!
Studio 10001 - not sure what the vertical planting/trellis in pots looks like. Can you point me to any images?

Keep it simple, get rid of the clutter. The idea of a small table with chairs is great..alfresco dining, morning coffee...If you are able to put long & narrow planters on the rail that would be ideal. A low-cost plant is Nasturtiums, plant the Alaska variety, the Red Cherry variety and the trailing one. Brilliant color, easy and cheap to grow from seed and can be put in salads (the leaves). The white or clear Christmas lights are a good idea as is a few larger candle holders. Of course adding texture and warmth with an outdoor rug is a good idea too. They are so available now, many choices to suit your budget!

    HI,
I like red, too! Off to a good start.
I would arrange this like a living room.
The wall that has your lounge chair, move your three tier plant stand there, with the pots all gathered on the side..
I don't know what's in the pots, if something is taller (like a palm tree) inexpensive for the season and creates privacy.
The empty pots can be arranged one upside down and the other ontop upside right. You can glue them together,
paint one color and put a glass top, wood circle or table top.Cheap!!
Now you can have a place to eat with those 2 chairs, on either side of the this homemade table..
Place the lounge on the opposite wall with the door, back of chair in the corner coming out at any angle.
The umbrella can go in the middle against the rail, and the two chair and table underneath, depending on shade requirements.
Hang something interesting on the white door.. maybe a mirror from inside.
A cheap rug can be made from painter's drop cloth.. Paint it any color, there's a green in the cushion, tape off stripes, big ones and paint green and white. done.

    Hope it helps..
    Just a bored interior designer..

Vertical planting can be trellised vines, or just something tall, like cypress, bamboo, pollarded trees (!!), etc.

Skinny topiary's will add a little depth and something natural. Get rid of the plant stand and try a bench maybe? How about some window planters on the outside of the banister with maybe geraniums?

Take the sun into consideration in your plan. morning sun will take very different plants than afternoon sun. Also, think about the time of day You will be using this Space. If it's usually at night, you may want to plant white flowers. If heat is a problem, Look for ways to keep the air circulating.

This is a video of a makeover. May not be as friendly budget as you would like but perhaps it will give you some ideas.

Think about how it will look from inside the condo. When you use pots keep the weight in consideration. You can buy large Styrofoam pots You can spray paint any color you want. You can use the plastic water bottles for drainage in the bottom of a large pot. Plant a few evergreens to look good in the winter.
Make a plan to cover several seasons To spread out the cost.

Start a "friendship garden". Ask all your friends for cuttings, plants they need to devide ,or things that were just a mistake for them. You'll be surprised at what lovely things you will get.
Also, be sure to check with your condo assoc. to know what you can and, more importantly, cannot do.

Life is the best thing you can put on your deck. The more you are out there, the better it will be.
Consider the blank wall just as you would inside your condo. You can get hangers to use on vinyl siding. A large metal piece would be nice. Remember you can paint anything.
fly a kite and tie it to the railing. A kite is fun to watch. Get a bottle of soap bubbles, everybody loves to watch bubbles float through the air.

Totally agree to get rid of the clutter. Its a small space . You may also want to use plant holders like these which will also add a bit of privacy.

Thanks! I like these planters. Do you know where I can find them?

Just back from our farmers market. The prices on plants are quite amazing. You could cover your deck in blooming plants for very little money. Check out your local market.
