Found a Nice Surprise

Look what I found last week. It's a part of a leaf of Siam Silver that Stush shared last Spring.

Though to see when it first sprouted being white on white.

That air conditioner behind it has a radiator underneath it. The heat's been on & I think it's helped kick start this growth.

It's growing fast, doubled in size in the last week.

WOoo ooo, fun before Spring comes ;>)

This is interesting Karen! Is the new plant white or a very light green? If it's originating from a leaf without any of the stem the plant should be metallica aka old name guineensis. If it comes from the white tissue of the leaf if could be an albino, but if there was some stem with the leaf it's probably another Siam Silver, which is what it looks like to me.

I think you're right about the heater having a lot to do with this offset coming on strong in the dead of winter.

Thanks for the picks, please keep us posted on progress.

I'm with Russ on this. From the picture, looks to have the same pattern of the leaf which it sprouted from. Very surprising to see.

    Hi Guys,

Why surprising to see Stush, the time of year or the color?

I held off answering 'cause question is hard to answer. When it first appeared it looked white pup against almost white leaf; I almost missed it. Then it looked light green, hard to tell.

Took update shots today, pup looks very light green.

Here's attempts to show the leaf's faintly light green stripe.

    The other side also striped,

On another front, another discovery from last week, peeking out from crumbly mix:

Look how cool, looks big. I happened to see a flash of green thru the mix & brushed some away to find this.

This is more of the Siam Silver which Stush shared last Spring. I've moved this pot around, don't think it's been near the heat of the radiators.

    More pix

In this longer shot, it's the taller plant on left.

Sorry for the dark & cluttered shots, didn't want to lift the plant & risk uprooting the new growth.

Great job growing it Karen. What was the surprise to us was that it is like the mother leaf if it (like Russ said) grew from a stem cutting should have reverted back to metallica.

    From same stock I gave you from, I got a sprout from the rhizome that was green like metallica. I carefully removed it from the base of plant and grew it on it's own. Since I don't own a metallica I like to keep it in my collection. Picture below;

Again, this was from a growing rhizome from base of mother plant and not from a rooted leaf. I guess just like a rhizome could produce variegation from any plant, just as well can revert back to original stock. Will see if it darkens up in full sun come summer.

Stush, based on pics from Karen, I feel certain that her new plant is growing from a rhizome, not a leaf cutting. On your metallica, I don't think it's a rare occurrence for a rhizome of a variety to produce it's base species, but doesn't happen often. It's great that you got a new plant for your collection.

I don't know about darkening in full sun in northern climates, but in Florida sun sans will be much lighter colored than if in shade.

    Hi Guys,

Updating further, I'm here to tell you Russ is right, there IS a rhizome under there. The pup's now taller than the leaf cutting & seems they shifted in the pot, exposing the rhizome.

See the roots sticking out from under the rhizome?

Now that it's bigger, it's more clearly what I expressed badly before. The original leaf looks more white w/ faint green stripes, the pup seems mostly lt. green w/ white stripes.

I'm embarrassed to say you can see the rhizome in my original pix (abt 4 o'clock position). I was so taken w/ the pup, I missed the rhizome completely, just thought it a stray bit of bark. On the 3rd pic too, it's at the 3 o'clock position, yikes I really missed it!

So what ID might I consider pls? Metallica?

Anyway, I really like it Stush, so thank you again.

Karen, didn't you say this sans was Siam Silver, or was that a plant in another pot? This is either Siam Silver or Manolyn, which I consider to be one and the same. The base species is metallica which was guineensis before it was renamed.

I think we all missed that piece of rhizome that was right there in the pic.

Thanks for all the pics. Winter is closing so I'm looking forward to more chat and pics from everyone come spring and summer.

    Closing for you, Russ.

I feel for you Pat, but maybe you're into winter sports. How much longer until you start feeling spring in Michigan... maybe May?

    Russ

    Maybe June.

Sounds like your summer lasts about 3 months... like Alaska!

May I pls. ask "Closing for you, Russ." what's that about?

To answer Russ' question, all 3 plants are from Stush in a box he'd shared saying they were Siam Silver. The 2 Sans. in pic above w/ small 3rd pot in front as well as the sprouted leaf, pup & newly found rhizome.

In the pic w/ trio of pots, based on comments from here, it would seem the left green & white Sans w/ its longer leaves & more white in center is the Siam Silver & the green & white striped Sans on the right w/ most of its green in the center of the leaves is a Bantel's. That's how I understood it.

Hi Karen, I had said above that winter was closing where I live in central Florida, and Pat replied 'closing for you'... meaning obviously not getting near spring in Michigan any time soon.

I think you're right on the IDs for Stush's sans in his photo.

    Meaning Siam SIlvers all?

Here's a shot of the 3 together that arrived in the same box / mailing.

Here's the left one sounding like SS

Here's the right one sounding more like BS.

& the new pup w/ Rhizome.

I'm indoors but yesterday it was 65 here, today in the low forties. The plants & I are confused.

This isn't a Sans., but since it's my own thread, here's a cluster of Hoya pubicalyx that just woke up. It bumped my face yesterday while I watered.

Happy Fake Spring, for us in the North Atlantic.

Karen, the sans you said looks like Bantel's looks like it to me too. But to be sure, probably need to ask Stush what he sent, if he remembers. The others in your pics seem to be Siam Silver. Many of my plants are waking up too, including hoyas... especially those in the greenhouse. Some of my sans are in bloom as well as a white-flowered dendrobium orchid.

June 6, 2016 sent Siam Silver and Bantel's Sensation. I usually mark them or at least send in separate bags or paper. Sorry I don't have any more info on my records. If I didn't sends markers with them, sorry I may have been out of them. I try to make a point of including a tag with them so not to confuse. That new sprout looks like a S. tri.~ 'Silver Laurentii' but my records doesn't show I sent any to her.

Karen do you recall if they were all in separate bags in the box?

Thanks guys, I'm not gonna worry abt further IDS on these, it's enough for me.

Thanks for clarifying the 'Closing' comments.

Stush, best I recall is a long priority box, abt 6 divisions wrapped in newspaper, don't recall any bags. If I'd seen any labels I'd have kept them.

No worries on this pls. Stush, I love their green & white variegation & enjoy them every time I look their way, so thanks again!!

Karen, how is your S. metallica 'Siam Silver' today? I really like this plant :) I have her too, and she recently made me a joke - her next, new leaf (on the right) does not look like 'Siam Silver' ... This is definitely 'White Striped Giant' :)

    Regards :)

Hmmm. Ewa to me that first leaf looks like "Siam Silver'. The second seems to have separated into more distinct green and white bands but I wonder if it is a sport or just an odd leaf. Neither look like 'White Striped Giant' to me.......at least mine not the ones I have seen have that much white on them........and the background green seems to be lighter on WSG. I'll get a photo later of my WSG. Very pretty leaf!

EWA, are these leaves on the same plant? If the same, it's likely an aberrant color pattern, but if the new one is a different offset it has a chance to be something different if leaves continue with the same variegation.

I agree with Chris that it doesn't exactly match WSG but it is very pretty.

In my opinion, Siam Silver and Manolyn are one and the same. Mine look exactly the same and both get the disfiguring rust spots.
