Am I stuck painting the front door black?

I'm buying a builder spec house, and I can't decide if I am stuck with black or white for the front door. If the stone was grey, I think it would give me more freedom to go with a colorful front door, but as it is there are already three distinct colors between the siding, shutters, and stone. Adding a colored front door seems like it would be too much, but if I did it, I'd choose grey (like BM chelsea gray HC 168) or yellow ochre (BM princeton gold HC 14). Or is sticking with black the best choice? Please share your opinions, thanks for your help!

I would make the front door pop with colour. Perhaps a cranberry. Then add a couple of plants in the fromt garden with a similar colour. Colourful doors are welcoming. Have fun!

Look at a color wheel. I think you'll see you've got more choices than you think. If you're really wanting a pop of color, think about pumpkin.

No, you're not stuck for colour choices at all. Pumpkin/burnt orange, steel blue/gray, green. It's all about the tone. Lovely home BTW.

the alternative is to swittch accent colors to (say) navy. Then you'll have to paint all the shutters and the balcony as well.

Thank you for the ideas everyone! I am still hesitant to add a strongly contrasting color on the front door, since there is already the strong contrast of the black shutters. Ideally I'd change the shutters to soft or medium grey board and batten style, but that's pricey to do :) Thanks again!

If your choices are between white and black, I'd definitely go for black - love that look! I also agree with montaguemp that a cranberry would look wonderful if you're looking to add that pop of color.

Hi,
a glossy black with a great baldwin silver knocker would look great. These painted doors only work -in my opinion when the front door is totally symmetrical -like a cape cod or small colonial house or a modern dwell style home. cranberry or bright red would be terrific. Go for the color - it will be distinctive and make your "builder" home a bit more personal.

I'm a traditionalist and I think a gloss black door would be beautiful. The trend to paint front doors garish shades of yellow, orange, purple and turquoise just doesn't resonate with me. That said, it's your choice. I think you can set it apart with big black planted urns with color and a beautiful black Chippendale bench on the porch. BTW, I love your house, very pretty.

I tend to be a little on the traditional side as well. I say go black on the door, then hang a colorful wreath on your front door to add a pop of color. You can bring in more color through potted flowers and landscaping!

Thank you everyone for sharing your opinions and for the kind words. At this point, I think I am strongly leaning towards a black door. The color can come from the Pennsylvania fieldstone (which is a tan color, not pink-tan as the photo suggests), as well as plantings/wreaths as many suggested :)

And bluenan, thanks for the suggestion on that bench, I love it.
